A few days ago came a surprising announcement: The light novel “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” (jap.: “Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu”) will be continued with a new volume. Readers of the original were naturally delighted by the news, but hopes for an anime comeback also flared up again after Kadokawa producer Junichiro Tamura refused to comment on a sequel as recently as last year.
3 Stories that Remained Hidden by Haruhi Suzumiya
However, since the anime adventures of the SOS Brigade came to an early end, fans of the series have already missed out on numerous stories about the crazy group of five. Therefore, we now present you with some stories that have not yet made it into the anime.
The Intrigues of Haruhi Suzumiya: The Lost Twin Sister
In the seventh volume of the light novel, after the conclusion of the time loop fiasco from “The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya,” our protagonist Kyon prepares to start the new year without time travel, apocalyptic worries, and maybe even some real peace and quiet together with the members of the SOS Brigade.
Just as he starts to get comfortable, he once again gets a visit from Mikuru Asahina from the future. But this time it's not the clearly older Mikuru, as he's already used to – in this case she's only eight days from the future. Instructed by the adult Mikuru, the two are to avert a terrible future.
Since the present Mikuru Asahina is not allowed to see her future self, Kyon passes off the eight-day older Mikuru as the missing twin sister Michiru to place her with Tsuruya on the pretext that she does not want to be seen by her sister. What disaster Michiru and Kyon are supposed to avert together, however, we won't reveal at this point.
The Wavering of Haruhi Suzumiya: Yuki Receives a Love Letter
The sixth volume, “The Wavering of Haruhi Suzumiya,” contains five short stories that take place between events from the previous books and recount previously unknown happenings. Of particular interest here is that in the story “Love at First Sight,” our usually cold-hearted alien Yuki Nagato receives a love letter.
But to be honest it was only a matter of time until someone in this universe understands the fascination around our favorite alien, who even got her own spin-off with “The Disappearance of Yuki Nagato”, and falls in love with her. However, who could have expected that it would even be an old school friend of Kyon's?
The secret admirer explains to Kyon that he has fallen in love with Yuki, but he is not yet worth confessing his love to her. So he comes up with a ten-year plan that ends with a marriage proposal to our alien. How Yuki Nagato reacts to the love letter and why she is disappointed by the confession, however, we'll keep for ourselves.
The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya: The Sixth Member
The trio of books, consisting of the ninth book, “The Distancing of Haruhi Suzumiya,” and the following two-parter, “The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya,” is unique in the franchise in the sense that it advances two timelines alternately.
In this, the story splits during a phone call. On one timeline, it is the call from Sasaki, a friend from Kyon's middle school, that sets in motion a story that has been told under the radar for several books. On the other timeline, it's the call from a new character.
Despite Haruhi's enthusiasm to grow her brigade, it seems unlikely that anyone else can live up to her standards. But as the SOS brigade once again surveys potential new members, only one remains out of the dozen present who can meet Haruhi's requirement: Yasumi Watahashi. She seems perfect in every way, but she hides a few secrets, one bigger than the other.
