What are the differences between the Sega Genesis Model 1, 2, and 3?

The Sega Genesis lasted an impressive nine years, and a lot of its longevity is thanks to several console revisions that helped to keep the system fresh and up-to-date. Cosmetically, it is pretty easy to tell the different models apart, but there are some important, non-obvious distinctions to note as well.

Sega Genesis Model 1:

  • Sega's original Genesis model
  • Model #MK-1601
  • Includes headphone jack
  • Uses SEGA MK-3025 Power Supply

Note: The first model Sega Genesis actually had two minor revisions. In the first revision, Sega installed a “Lock-out” chip that region-locked the console. They also have the Sega License Screen that displays before each game boots up. The second alteration removed the EXT port, as it was never really used commercially anyways.

Sega Genesis Model 2:

  • Sega's first Genesis revision
  • Model #MK-1631
  • Changed from power switch to power button
  • Headphone Jack, RF port, and Channel 3 & 4 ports were all removed
  • Requires a different Power Supply than the original model, the MK-2103

The Sega Genesis doesn't really offer much in the way of limited editions or color variants. If you are looking to import games from other regions, however, purchasing a Sega Mega Drive is the way to go.

Essentially, the consoles are almost exactly the same aside from the name, as “Mega Drive” was already trademarked in the U.S. prior to the release of the console. The only important thing to note is that the Japanese Mega Drive outputs NTSC video while the European Mega Drive outputs PAL.
