So who is K-2SO? The robot serves as part of Jyn Erso‘s rogue group that aims to get their hands on the Death Star plans – the ones used by the Rebels to identify and exploit the weakness found as per the events of A New Hope.
K-2S0 delivers part “robot awesomeness” and part comedy relief in a similar vein to BB-8 or the two other famous robots that turn up in Star Wars movies.
Alan Tudyk plays the Enforce Droid, K-250 in Rogue One. He's 8 feet tall and is usually addressed as “Kaytoo.”
He's also done a fair bit of prior voice-over work, his roles as Mickey in Halo 3: ODST and Zootopia.
The look of K-2S0 is a “classic” robot look with dark metal, and bright eyes suggestive of the titular robot in The Iron Giant.
He wouldn't look out of place serving in Jabba's Palace.
The droid was originally an Imperial droid and was reprogrammed by his “mentor” Cassian Andor. Yet something didn’t quite take. “He’s not quite all there,” Tudyk said. “He speaks his mind and says things that could be unsettling. Very honest. If you know any old people, he’s like that.”
The pragmatic droid is an effective insertion agent, as he can blend in perfectly at Imperial installations and outposts.
To Jyn: “The Captain says you are a friend. I will not kill you.”
Jyn replies: “Thanks!”
To the crew he is flying with in Rogue One: “There is a 97.6 percent chance of failure” – sounds like he's been hanging out with C-3PO a bit too much!
This next one is a bit weird. K-2SO appears to make a reference to the Friends television show:
To Jyn: “I'll be there for you, the Captain said I had to.”
To Jyn after she has just shot his own double following a tense firefight: “Did you know that wasn't me?” Jyn sheepishly replies “of course.”
Having just slapped his Master Cassian Andors to distract Imperial troops, he mocks “There’s a fresh one if you mouth off again.”
K-2SO: “You’re letting her keep it? Would you like to know the probability of her using it against you? It’s high.”
Captain Cassian Andor: “Let’s get going.”
K-2SO: “It’s very high.”
The above conversation is about a gun and it's quite clever because Jyn later surrenders the gun to K-2So and he effectively saves Jyn and Andor's lives by holding off the troopers.
When flying the U-Wing and having a hard time with it “There's a 26 percent chance of failure.” Bodhi Rook then mentions he really has no idea where they are, but that they are close to their destination, so K-2SO upgrades his prediction, saying “Well now there's a 35 percent chance of failure.” Bohdi replies “I don't wanna know” to which K-2SO then says “I understand that.”
To Jyn: “Congratulations, you're being rescued. Please do not resist.”
Jyn, Andor, and our robot friend are surrounded by troopers and one of them mistakes K-2So for someone escorting the prisoners, so he gets two clever lines to say “There's a fresh one if you mouth off again” and “I am taking these prisoners to imprison them… in prison.”
About Rey simply saying she “found” her blaster: “I find that answer vague and unconvincing.”
To which the cheeky robot says “Not me. I can survive in space.”
