Recently, there have been rumors that the popular anime Noragami has been renewed for a third season. We would like to clarify that there is no truth in these rumors. A tweet spread this rumor and as a result, everyone started speculating about the upcoming release of Noragami season 3. So we advise you not to believe these tweets from unverified accounts.

Noragami is an amazing action, adventure, fantasy and comedy anime series. It depicts the story of a minor god who seeks to be widely worshipped and teams up with a human girl he saved, in order to gain fame, recognition and at least one shrine dedicated to him.

Details about the Anime series Noragami

This animated TV series is produced by the Japanese studio Bones (Bungo Stray Dogs, Mob Psycho 100 and The Case Study of Vanitas). It is directed by Kotaro Tamura and written by Deko Akao. The first season comprising 12 episodes was broadcast from January 5, 2014 to March 23, 2014, as well as 2 OVA (original video animation) that were broadcast on February 17, 2014 and July 17, 2014 respectively.

The second season consisting of 13 episodes began airing on October 2, 2015, and ended on December 25, 2015. Season 2 also included 2 OVAs that aired on November 17, 2015 and March 17, 2016 respectively. Now that almost six years have passed, there is no official information about when the anime will return. So, will there be a season 3 of Noragami? Let's try to find out.

Will There Be Noragami Season 3?

Noragami Season 3 Release Date

For anime, the possibility of a sequel depends on several factors such as the source material, popularity, demand for the sequel, sales and profits of the anime. We have analyzed these factors for Noragami Season 3. Based on our research, here is what we think about the possibility of the third season of Noragami. Let's discuss all these factors in detail:

Noragami Season 3: Source material information

Every anime has its source material in the form of light novels, virtual novels, manga or a mobile game. Noragami has as its source material a manga series of the same name.

To date, 23 volumes of manga have been published. The most recent manga volume by author Adachitoka was released in Japan on February 17, 2021. There are also two spin-off manga stories entitled Noragami: Stray Stories.

The first volume of the manga series was released on December 6, 2010! The special volumes were released on November 15, 2013 and February 15, 2019 respectively. Noragami season 1 adapted volumes 1 to 3 and season 2 adapted volumes 4 to 9 of the manga series.

The first OVA adapted chapter 25 of the manga and some random elements, while the second OVA adapted chapter 24 of the manga and part of Noragami: Stray stories. The third OVA also used the same elements, and the fourth OVA adapted chapter 41.

So, the directors have about 15 volumes to adapt into an animated series. So we conclude that there is more than enough source material left to go ahead with more anime episodes.

Noragami Season 3: Sales and profit information

The possibility of a new season of an anime series depends very much on the profitability and sales of its source material, Blu-ray copies, spin-off products and the number of viewers on OTT platforms. So we have to analyze the performance of the first and second season of Noragami and see if it was profitable or not.

If the anime did well, it will surely encourage the producers to launch a new season, but if the anime did not make much money for the producers, they will stop launching more seasons. As in the case of Tokyo Ravens, that's why we don't have Tokyo Ravens season 2 yet.

Blu-Ray sales

As for sales, the first season of Noragami sold about 5000 Blu-Ray copies per volume, and the second season about 2000 copies per volume. This is not a big number, as successful anime like Overlord and Demon Slayer have had huge Blu-Ray sales.

However, Blu-Ray sales have dropped significantly for all anime as streaming has become a favorable option. Users are no longer buying expensive Blu-Rays as they did a few years ago. Streaming has replaced Blu-Ray as the main source of revenue in the last five years.

Manga sales

Volume 21 of the manga series sold about 120,000 copies. Released on June 17, 2020, Volume 22 sold about 48,000 copies in its first week. Volume 12 of the manga series, released on November 17, 2014, has sold over 3,00,000 copies.

Thus, we can see that the series is not accumulating much profit as expected. There was a 60% drop in Blu-Ray sales between the two seasons. Moreover, the manga is the main reason why the series would not get its third season, because it sold very few copies compared to the sales of a few years ago.

Even the manga series Accel World is experiencing the same drop in sales, and that's why Accel World season 2 hasn't been released yet.

The popularity of Noragami and the demand for a new season

Let's take a look at how Noragami has fared in the popularity rankings since it first aired in Japan.

The franchise's social media accounts are still active. The franchise's official Twitter account, which has 109,000 followers, last tweeted in May 2021 to celebrate the 100 million views of Noragami's opening.

According to Google search engine data, the second season was more popular than the first season worldwide. However, in the country of origin, Japan, the search volume for Noragami dropped for the second season. In terms of the current trend, searches for Noragami in Japan are only 3% of the peak.

In terms of popularity, the results are mixed for Noragami. Noragami season 2 was not as popular in Japan as season 1. However, the situation is quite the opposite worldwide.

Noragami Season 3 Release Date

For the moment, we can't say anything about Noragami season 3. However, it doesn't mean that there won't be a season 3. There is a 70-30% chance that there will be a sequel and that there won't be. The reason why there won't be a sequel is that the manga sold very few copies and the Blu-ray sales were not good either. Also, only the first season of Noragami was released on the OTT platform, which didn't bring in much profit.

The reason the series is getting a sequel is that it has enough source material ready to be adapted. The other reason would be that the demand for season 3 is quite high because fans are still waiting for season 3.

We will have to wait a year or two and hope for good news. If season 3 is now announced by the studio Bones in the next year or this year, then the chances of release will be in 2023 or 2024.

What will be the plot of Noragami season 3?

In the third season, we will witness Yato's true identity, his dark side, as well as his dark past. Bishamon, whose first family was killed by Yato, forgives him and Yato wants to become a God with millions of followers who worship him to get the golden glow. He will start gathering his allies for this. We will also see Yato's ex-Regalia arrive to take his revenge on Yato and we will know the reason for it. Yato has no idea how powerful Nora is.

We will also learn about Ebisu, the God of Fortune of the parallel world, who used ghosts to improve the parallel world and was declared a criminal. No God will be happy to see his way of working and many of them plan to kill him. Meanwhile, Yukine will help Yato to become the God of Fortune. The third season will also show how the friendship between Hiyori, Yato and Yukine will develop throughout the story.

Noragami Plot

Yato is a NORAGAMI: a “stray god” in an old tracksuit and homeless. Even his “Shinki (Regalias)” is fed up and quits. But Yato has big plans: he wants to become the most powerful of all gods and build his own temple. To achieve this goal, he accepts orders of all kinds for five yen each.

Hiyori is a daughter from a good family who secretly likes “martial arts”. When she accidentally watches Yato on the way to school trying to catch a small cat on a busy street, she bravely steps in – the only stupid thing is that she herself is caught by the bus and hit. Through the accident, she becomes a hybrid being – half-human, half-spirit. Yato promises to free her from this dilemma. But before that, Yato needs a new Shinki.
