Sometimes we might be guilty of taking Star Wars too seriously. Not as seriously as some Star Wars fans mind you – we don’t really care about parsecs actually being a measurement of distance – so it’s good to take a step back and have some fun with the franchise, as fun is what movies are all about, really.
The making of the Star Wars movies isn't all work and no play, either. Cast and crew aren't working non-stop, without any form of downtime, as some people might believe. They need breaks, fun, camaraderie, and some time in which the pressure to make a successful blockbuster is off – just like any “normal” person in any “normal” job.
In this piece, we'll take you through some pictures of the actors from the Star Wars movies being caught a little bit out of character, while in costume, at amusing or interesting moments. The late, great Carrie Fisher, for example, always seemed to have a blast on set – indeed, it looks like the Star Wars production sets were a fun place to be in general.
1. Anthony Daniels
Here is Anthony Daniels, in his C-3PO costume sans the helmet, admiring himself in a mirror during the filming of the original Star Wars trilogy.
2. Peter Mayhew and Irvin Kershner
In this picture, The Empire Strikes Back director, the late Irvin Kershner, talks (in a rather stern manner, by the look of it) to the late Peter Mayhew while he's stood in his Chewbacca costume sans the headpiece.
3. Carrie Fisher and Peter Mayhew
Carrie Fisher had an obvious affection for her fellow cast members. Here she is giving Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew a kiss while cuddling up to him.
4. Carrie Fisher on the Set of Hoth
Here is Carrie Fisher again, this time posing for a photograph with two of her fellow cast members on the set of the Hoth base behind the scenes of The Empire Strikes Back.
5. Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Billy Dee Williams
Here we see Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Billy Dee Williams relaxing by having a laugh (and a cup of tea, in Williams' case) behind the scenes of The Empire Strikes Back, while director Irvin Kershner looks on through a camera.
6. Carrie Fisher and George Lucas
To the envy of Star Wars fans all around the world, George Lucas gets an eyeful of Carrie Fisher in her iconic slave bikini in this behind-the-scenes shot from Return of the Jedi.
7. Jeremy Bulloch
Here, the late Boba Fett actor Jeremy Bulloch can be seen taking some time out without his helmet, alongside some alien female co-stars, on the set of Return of the Jedi.
8. Daisy Ridley and John Boyega
The sequel trilogy stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega taking a candid photograph together in their free time away from filming.
9. Ray Park
On the set of The Phantom Menace, Ray Park – the actor who played Darth Maul – performs a martial arts pose while wearing full Darth Maul head makeup… and a plain white T-shirt.
