They may be very different concepts, but the line between intelligence and stupidity can be very thin.
Intelligence can be in how you react to sensitive cases, how you dress, communicate, and even walk. And yes, it does matter. So, how do you know a smart person from a dumb one? How do you know when to walk away from an argument because the person you're arguing with is close-minded and, well, dumb?
You might want to check out these tell-tale signs.
1. They Are Open-Minded
Intelligent people are generally very open-minded. They are willing to hear different opinions and see things from an opposite view, even though they think it may be wrong.
Also, they may change their opinions when they see a reason to and realize they may be wrong. No one knows it all, after all. Changing your opinion doesn't make you weak and indecisive, it shows a great will to learn and grow.
2. Humility
People with little to no knowledge often act very arrogant and turn a deaf ear to other perspectives. Whereas, people with much knowledge are down to earth and willing to grow.
According to one person, they learned from their father, “an intelligent person is full of humility, while the ignorant is full of arrogance, because ignorant people don't know what they don't know, and that gives them an illusion of having knowledge when they have nothing. In humility, people are intelligent.”
3. Curiosity
Naturally, one has to crave information to be intelligent. Otherwise, they can be stuck with the same knowledge they had for a long while, which counters the whole idea of intelligence.
Intelligent people are always curious and determined to know as much as possible. It could get to point that it could even become annoying. Still, it's better to know as much as you can to know what to do in every situation than to be clueless and make mistakes.
4. They Can Hold Conversations
It can be very annoying when you're trying to have a conversation with someone and they can't say more than two words. They either don't know how to keep conversations moving forward, or don't want to.
Intelligent people can hold conversations on a wide array of subjects, because of their wealth of knowledge, which they have amassed due to an insatiable curiosity. This may sound unimportant, but finding people you can actually have good conversations with is getting harder the more intelligence is looked down on.
5. Being Willing to Admit When They Are Wrong
Again, no one knows it all. You should be able to admit that you are wrong, and be willing to take corrections. If a plant isn't growing, it's dying; the same is true for intelligent people.
This means they have accountability for their actions and not only want to learn from their mistakes, they actually make sure they change.
6. They Easily Understand Your Points
You could be talking about the most complicated things and intelligent people would understand what you mean. You do not have to repeat or extensively analyze what you're saying for them to get your point. They also understand very quickly, even when you're not done making your point. Sounds amazing, right?
7. Wittiness
Humor is one of the most attractive qualities in a person. Ask Pete Davidson‘s exes. And more often than not, an intelligent person is very witty and has a witty remark for almost any comment.
But humor also shows how quickly someone processes statements and discussions.
8. Discussions Are Educative
When talking to an intelligent person, you are going to learn a lot of new things, without feeling like it's being shoved in your face. You generally benefit from their wealth of knowledge, and listening and talking to them feels very satisfying.
