For many of us, plenty of ordinary, everyday things frighten us. The good news is that you're not alone. A recent online discussion lists some of the most common things people are seriously concerned about. Here's what makes the list.

The idea of needles really freaks a lot of people out. Having sharp pieces of metal put into your skin isn't a great thought and some people hate that idea more than others.

3. Death

The unfortunate thing about life is that it's temporary. We can't live forever. One day, everybody we know and love will perish.

One of the biggest fears people battle is not knowing what comes after death: do we go to heaven? Is it permanent darkness? It's a common cause of existential dread.

4. The Ocean

The ocean is big. Like, really, really big. We haven't explored a large majority of it despite it occupying most of the earth.

We've all read about the terrifying creatures that lurk at the bottom of the ocean. Thankfully, they'll never survive on land.

5. Abandonment

It's so hard to be left behind, especially by someone you love. Some people hate saying goodbye and the fear they may never see that person again. This can stem from being left behind in childhood or a really tough relationship.

Sleep paralysis is terrifying because when it happens, it's hard to do anything about it!

We've all been there before: you're swimming in a body of water and your foot touches a plant or sometimes, a fish. It's terrifying and feels very eerie because you can't see exactly what it is.

8. Something Happening to Their Kids

It is so scary to text a message from a partner or parent that just says, “We need to talk.” It could be about anything really. Some parents send that message and they just have a question about dinner that night, while other times, it could be something more serious. No matter what, it's a scary line to hear.

11. The Emergency Alert System Sound

The emergency alert system in the U.S. is loud and terrifying. A lot of users online talk about that anytime it goes off, they jump and they're terrified of whatever the message says. Sometimes it's a silver alert while other times it's about the weather. No matter what, it's an eerie sound.

12. Teenagers

My Chemical Romance said it best, but teenagers can be really scary. A lot of them feel the need to say whatever is on their mind and can say and do horrible things, just because they're full of angst.

13. Becoming Schizophrenic or Developing Alzheimer's Disease

If you've seen a family member develop of serious disease like Schizophrenia or Alzheimer's, it's hard to watch them lose the memories and the person they once were. It's scary to think that it could happen to you one day as well.

14. Bugs

As a fellow detester, I'm not surprised that bugs are the number one answer. June bugs, red devil eye katydids, bed bugs, and giant water beetles also made their list.

14. Jail

Being locked up without the freedom to do whatever you want can be so terrifying. One person said online told the story about how they were in jail for 10 hours and wished to never be back in that experience ever again.
