Netflix’s new series, Wednesday beat Stranger Things’ record for most hours of viewing for an English language series within the first week after its release.
Even though streaming services are becoming increasingly competitive, Netflix still holds the top spot as the most popular streaming service.
This is partly due to the success of the vast range of Netflix Originals shows and films like Wednesday and Stranger Things, which have both broken the record for most viewing hours on the platform. However, Wednesday came out on top in the first week after its release.
Is Netflix still the most popular streaming service?
Even with this multitude of streaming platforms on the market, Netflix is arguably one of the oldest and most recognisable names.
However, with the release of the new Netflix with advertisement plans and the increase in competition from other streaming services that are gradually gaining traction across the world, many people wonder whether Netflix is still the most popular streaming service on the market.
In reality, even with the 970 000 subscribers that Netflix lost on their platform in 2022, this streaming service is still the most popular choice, with around 225 million subscribers worldwide and about 78 percent of households in the United States still being subscribed to the service by the end of September of this year.
Wednesday vs Stranger Things
One of the reasons why Netflix has managed to stay so popular despite the fact that it is in such a competitive market is because of the sheer quantity and quality of the streaming service’s original content.
In 2016 alone, Netflix commissioned over 126 “Netflix Original” shows and films.
Now, in 2022, the list of Netflix Originals includes many well-known titles like The Crown, The Witcher, The Umbrella Academy, Bridgerton, Big Mouth, Cheer, and many, many more.
Two of the most popular Netflix Originals series in teen drama and drama comedy genres include Stranger Things and Wednesday. Stranger Things was released in 2016 and quickly became a worldwide phenomenon.
When the second part of the fourth season of Stranger Things was released on Netflix on 1 July 2022, the show reached 335 million hours of viewing across the globe within its first week, which set a new record on Netflix.
However, only a few short months later, Wednesday surpassed this record when it got 341.2 million hours of viewing, and it became the biggest ever opening week for an English series in Netflix history following the release of the show’s first season on 23 November 2022.
Does this mean that Wednesday is better than Stranger Things?
Although Wednesday may have beat Stranger Things’ record for most viewing hours within the first week of the show’s release, this does not necessarily mean that the show is better than the latter.
Wednesday and Stranger Things are created for different audiences and Wednesday relies much more heavily on nostalgia, whereas Stranger Things relies much more on science-fiction tropes.
Stranger Things has a very loyal following of fans and after the series had been available on Netflix for a total of 28 days, the show managed to reach 1.15 billion hours of views.
The fourth season of Stranger Things also received widespread acclaim from critics and fans of the franchise, as did all of the previous seasons of the show.
The series shot to the Top 10 of Netflix’s most watched lists in 83 countries across the world, which is tied with Wednesday’s score, and which illustrates just how popular the show is.
Why did Wednesday beat the record set by Stranger Things?
The initial high viewership of Wednesday can definitely be attributed to the series’ star-studded cast and production team.
While Jenna Ortega, who plays the starring role of Wednesday Addams, has been praised for her brilliant performance, well-known names in the supporting cast such as Gwendoline Christie, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Christina Ricci, and even Tim Burton on the production team, definitely attracted a large audience to begin with.
However, beyond the brilliant cast, the show also hits a nostalgic nerve for many viewers, who loved the previous shows and films in the The Addams Family franchise, and which is suitable for a wide range of demographics.
Does this mean that Wednesday is the most-watched show on Netflix?
Wednesday did break the record for most viewing hours for an English language series and was streamed in over 50 million households at one point, but the show did not beat the ultimate Netflix most-watched record.
Squid Game, which is a Korean drama, is still the most-watched show on Netflix, as the series reached a total of 571.76 million hours of viewership in its first week.
