Wells Fargo Banking Services

Wells Fargo is one of the largest banks offering financial services in the United States. According to Business Insider, Wells Fargo is number four in terms of asset management in the United States, managing a total of $1.89 trillion, almost a trillion more than number five – Goldman Sachs.

Wells Fargo is a member of the FDIC and is insured – like most large banks – and they offer a variety of financial services to customers who hold accounts with them. These financial services include (but not limited to):

  • Wells Fargo mortgages
  • Checking accounts
  • Saving accounts
  • Retirement accounts
  • Credit cards
  • Lending (Small business loans, personal loans, auto loans, equity lines)
  • Commercial and small business banking

Wells Fargo account fraud scandal

In 2016 it was brought to light that employees at Wells Fargo were participating in a scheme called “Cross-Selling.” Banking institutions were judged based on the number of accounts consumers held with that institution.

Combined with a high “Sales Culture,” branch mangers and individual bankers were faced with seemingly impossible sales quotas so they opened up additional accounts without customer consent.

For example, someone with a Wells Fargo mortgage, would later learn that they had a checking and savings account in their name – even credit card accounts.

According to the American Bankruptcy Institute Journal, Wells Fargo employees reportedly “Opened as many as 1.5 million checking and savings accounts, and more than 500,000 credit cards, without customers authorization.”

The toxic high-pressure sales culture incentivized employees to do this by offering bonuses, resulting in some even participating in fraud. Wells Frago employees would falsify pre-approved credit card applications for consumers without their knowledge. Creating more products, some employees would even use their address to receive fraudulent account cards.

The result of the scheme:

Wells Fargo was fined a total of $185 million, but as of 2018 was looking at over $2.7 billion in civil lawsuits. Consumers were aware when they began to be charged banking fees they were unaware of for accounts they didn't sign up for.

Since the news broke of the scandal, Wells Fargo has instituted systems to provide better oversight while removing bonuses for high-sales pressure. Over 5,000 employees were fired and in 2019, president Tim Sloan who took over in October 2016 stepped down.

If anything, banking with Wells Fargo might be one of the safer options including the fact they:

  • Were heavily scrutinized and thus implemented regulations to protect consumers
  • Can offer better products in order to rebrand their image
  • Watched by government and more oversight
