Call the Midwife airs on PBS in the United States, but you can also find the show on a variety of streaming services.
Call the Midwife is a popular period drama that chronicles the daily lives of midwives, nuns, nurses and their patients in 1950s London.
Although it can be difficult to keep track of this British show in the US, Call the Midwife is available to purchase and stream on an array of platforms.
About Call the Midwife
The BBC period drama, Call the Midwife is based on the real-life memoirs of the late Jennifer Worth.
It follows a group of midwives, nuns and nurses played by well-known names such as Helen George, Megan Cusack, Jenny Agutter and more, who work for Nonnatus House.
These nurses, midwifes and nuns are charged with caring for the most vulnerable communities in the Poplar district located in the East End of London in the late 1950s and 1960s and their duties often extend beyond regular check-ups and prescriptions.
Where to watch Call the Midwife
Call the Midwife first started airing in the United Kingdom (UK) in January of 2012 and the show was a hit from the very beginning. In fact, the season one finale episode brought in more than 9.2 million viewers.
This made Call the Midwife the most successful drama series on BBC One since 2001 at the time.
This good start was enough to convince BBC to take the show across the pond and Call the Midwife started airing on PBS in the United States (US) just a few months later, in September 2012.
Now, more than a decade down the line, BBC has already renewed Call the Midwife for a twelfth and a thirteenth season.
The eight-episode Call the Midwife season 12 aired in the UK between January 1 and February 26, 2023.
But fans of the show in the United States will be happy to know that they are not far behind, as this most recent season started airing live on PBS Masterpiece on March 19, 2023.
US fans of the show that missed these initial live broadcasts or those that simply want to re-watch the show in their spare time should be happy to hear that Call the Midwife is also available on several streaming platforms.
This includes on-demand viewing on the PBS website, Netflix, various digital buy-and-rent platforms, and of course, the US alternatives to BBC iPlayer.
Where to stream all 12 seasons of Call the Midwife
PBS has become the US hub for all things Call the Midwife, which means that you can stream all the seasons of the series via the PBS website and the PBS app (which is free to download, but may require an additional PBS subscription to access all of the content).
It is also worth noting that signing up for a PBS Passport often gives fans early access to content, which is good to keep in mind with Call the Midwife season 13 still on the horizon.
Call the Midwife is also available to stream on Netflix and the twelfth season of the show is expected to arrive on the platform as early as September 4, 2023.
Where to buy Call the Midwife
If streaming is not your thing, or you simply do not want to add yet another streaming subscription to your monthly expenses, Call the Midwife is also available on an array of online purchasing platforms.
This includes Amazon Prime Video, where you can buy all 12 seasons of Call the Midwife, for $2.99 per episode or $16.99 per season.
Is BBC iPlayer available in the US?
While Call the Midwife is also available to stream through BBC iPlayer in the UK, this service is not available in the US yet.
But this does not necessarily mean that all hope is lost, as there are two streaming services which function kind of like a US-version of the BBC iPlayer.
These platforms are BritBox and Acorn TV. Both of these streaming platforms have a vast range of quintessential British television shows and make it possible for fans to access episodes from shows like Call the Midwife and others from outside of the UK.
A BritBox subscription currently costs $8.99 per month or $89.99/year, but if you act quickly, you may be able to take advantage of a special, limited time offer which ends on September 5, 2023, and will give you 10% off on the annual plan.
An Acorn TV subscription will be $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year.
