Why Netflix doesn’t want to release Stranger Things one episode at a time

Wednesday vs Stranger Things

Netflix decided not to release season four of Stranger Things weekly as the platform asserted that fans of the series have come to expect binge-worthy season releases.

It took almost three years since season three of Stranger Things for the sci-fi hit Netflix original to return with the fourth season.

It was believed that the fourth season could have been released as weekly episodes, but Netflix has expressed it has no intentions of doing this with any of its content.

Has Netflix ever released weekly episodes?

Most leading paid subscription streaming video-on-demand platforms are expected to release an episode per week with new seasons of their popular shows. This trend is especially popular with shows that have episodes with an average of 50 minutes or more.

Think HBO Max with Game Of Thrones and subsequently, with Euphoria. But Netflix has never done this, and their only alternative to releasing the entire season is split-cours.

Why Netflix doesn't want to release Stranger Things one episode at a time

Prior to the availability of Stranger Things season four, part one in May 2022, all season four’s episodes exceeded the one-hour mark and the shortest episode was 63 minutes.

The average duration of the first seven episodes was 77 minutes. Insiders thought that this was the perfect opportunity for Netflix to join the likes of HBO Max and Disney+, which adopted a weekly release approach for their popular series, with a double or triple-episode premium release.

But Netflix has rejected this trend for all its shows. Explaining the decision in light of the Stranger Things release, the head of scripted series for Netflix US and Canada, Peter Friedlander, explained:

“For the fans of ‘Stranger Things,’ this is how they’ve been watching that show, and I think to change that on them would be disappointing. To not give them exactly what they’ve been expecting — which is ‘Stranger Things’ is a seasonal experience, they go through that with them — I think that it would be an abrupt change for the member.”

Will Stranger Things have a fifth season?

Following the availability of Stranger Things season four, part two, on Friday, 1 July 2022, Netflix confirmed that there will be a fifth season of the series.

When is season 5 of Stranger Things coming?

No official release date has been announced for season five of Stranger Things, but this time fans won’t need to wait three years, as the season has a 2023-slated release date.

What can we expect from season 5 of Stranger Things?

“We know what the ending is. It's conceivable that it changes but I think it's unlikely because it's one of those endings that just feels, and has always felt, right. And it also feels sort of inevitable. Then when you come up with it, you're like, ‘oh yeah well, that is absolutely what is has to be,'” said Matt Duffer, the producer of Stranger Things, to Cosmopolitan.
