Wednesday was filmed in Romania so that Tim Burton could maintain the gothic and macabre style and tone that he wanted for the show.
Wednesday has become one of the most popular shows on Netflix, but there are positive and negative elements to this teen drama.
One of the good elements include the fact that the series features Tim Burton and The Addams Family’s signature gothic styles throughout. In order to maintain this look and feel, Wednesday was filmed on location in Romania.
The positive and the negative of the new Wednesday series
The new Wednesday series that started streaming on Netflix on 23 November 2022 quickly shot to the top of Netflix’s most-watched charts in countries all around the world.
The show was streamed for over 341 million hours in the week after its release, which makes it the record holder for most hours viewed in a week for an English-language TV series on Netflix, but many people have wondered if the show is actually any good.
Fortunately, as the number of views increases, so does the number of reviews, and most people seem to agree that even though the show does features some tired teen drama tropes, is entertaining enough overall.
Jenna Ortega has been praised for her performance in the lead role of Wednesday Addams, and of course, the rest of the cast also live up to this high bar, not to mention the fact that the show has an intriguing murder mystery at its core.
Why was Wednesday filmed in Romania?
Another part of why Wednesday has managed to become so popular in such a short time is because famed filmmaker, Tim Burton, is at the helm of the show, acting as its director and executive producer.
Any fans of Burton’s work will know that his signature gothic aesthetic is well-aligned with The Addams Family’s macabre and dark tone.
Burton decided that most of the filming for Wednesday would be done on location in Romania because this location really captured the look and feel of the Addams’ family that Burton wanted to encapsulate in this show.
While the story of Wednesday actually takes place in Jericho, Vermont, the historic and neo-gothic design style of some of the locations like the Cantacuzino Castle, Casa Niculescu-Dorobanțu, Conacul Olga Greceanu, and more definitely create a sense that Nevermore Academy and the rest of the town in the show fit into the Addams’ world.
However, adapting to making the sets on these locations look like they could belong in the fairly modern town of Jericho in the show still presented its own challenges for the cast and crew while they were filming.
Fortunately, it seems as though the locations ultimately succeeded in giving the show the eclectic feeling and aesthetic that Burton was going for.
Was it complicated filming on location in Romania?
The decision to film on location in Romania was certainly not made hastily, as the Romanian press already spotted director Tim Burton scouting for locations in May 2021.
Icon Films helped the American production team get situated once they arrived in Romania, but all of the hard work was not done when they arrived in Bucharest.
The show was ultimately shot on 70 sets, six different sound stages, and many locations in the country’s capital.
It took six months to film all eight episodes of the first season of Wednesday, not to mention the extra time and effort that the post-production team had to put into the special effects to ensure that the sets looked like they were in Vermont, but still have the trademark Addams Family look and feel.
Where was the Nevermore Academy scenes filmed?
One of the most notable locations that fans of the show will most likely recognise within seconds as the exterior of Nevermore Academy is the Cantacuzino Castle, which is located in the Carpathian Mountains in Europe.
Some of the interior shots of Nevermore Academy, like Principal Weems’ office, were filmed at the Palatul Monteoru monument in the Victory Avenue area of Bucharest, and Casa Niculescu-Dorobanțu, which is also a historic landmark in Bucharest.
Where were the other scenes in the first season of Wednesday filmed?
Since there were so many sets built especially for the show, many of the outdoor scenes, like Pilgrim World, the quad, and scenes of the town of Jericho in general, were filmed on set at Buftea Studios.
However, some scenes were shot in other locations around Romania, which include:
- Conacul Olga Greceanu as the Gates Mansion
- The Brănești and Sterbei lakes for scenes during the Poe Cup
- Gara Regală as the train station near Nevermore Academy
- The Bucharest Botanical Garden for the greenhouse scenes
