Amal Clooney is reflecting on how marriage to George Clooney changed the way her work, family life, and public image overlap.
The international human rights lawyer spoke about the shift during a Cartier Dialogues event in Bangkok on June 9. People reported that Amal said her life “changed quite a lot” after marrying George in 2014 because she could no longer keep her professional and personal worlds as separate as before.
Amal, 48, was already a high-profile human rights lawyer before her marriage. George, 65, was one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actors. The couple married in 2014 and welcomed twins Alexander and Ella in 2017.
Her comments came during the Cartier Women’s Initiative events in Bangkok, where Vogue Business reported that Amal took part in Cartier Dialogues and later presented top awards at the initiative’s ceremony.

Amal said she used to have a work life and personal life that “could look quite different,” according to People. After she married George, she said those worlds became harder to keep apart.
She said she was initially aware of how the public might reduce her to a “one-dimensional view.” Amal recalled thinking she could not be seen wearing a certain dress or attending certain events because she would later be appearing before a judge.
Page Six reported that Amal said life had been easier when she could decide what kind of exposure she received.
She Said Public Scrutiny Did Not Stop Family Decisions
Amal said she eventually decided that public reaction could not control choices that mattered to her family or relationship.
“I wouldn’t allow that factor to stop me from doing things that were important for my family or for my relationship,” she said, according to People.
She also said her work would speak for itself. “Ultimately if you’re good at what you do, that is going to shine through or not,” Amal said.
Parenthood Changed Some of the Clooneys’ Travel Rules
Amal and George’s public and professional lives changed again after they became parents. People cited George’s earlier comments that both he and Amal had to rethink travel to dangerous areas after Alexander and Ella were born.
George said he used to enjoy going to dangerous places, including the Nuba Mountains, Darfur, and Abyei. He also said Amal had spent years working on court cases from a bunker in Beirut.
“Amal and I both had to change our goals on where we would go,” George told People in 2025. “You had to change sort of what the rules were.”
The Clooney Foundation Remains Part of Their Public Work
Amal and George co-founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice in 2016. The foundation says it provides free legal aid in defense of free speech and women’s rights in more than 40 countries.
The organization says its work has helped free dozens of journalists and provided legal support to thousands of women. Its programs include TrialWatch, which supports journalists and democracy defenders, and Waging Justice for Women, which provides legal aid to women and girls.
At the Bangkok event, People reported that Amal spoke about the foundation’s legal assistance for girls and women, including work in Malawi, where she said one in 10 girls under 15 are forced into marriage.
