Amanda Seyfried turned down Gamora because she feared “Guardians of the Galaxy” could damage her career if it flopped. A Marvel movie built around a talking tree, a raccoon and a group of space travelers seemed like a gamble she did not want to take.

She has since admitted that she misjudged the film. But the actress says its success has not made her regret passing on a role whose demands did not appeal to her.

Seyfried explained her thinking in a SAG-AFTRA Foundation retrospective uploaded on December 15, 2025. Those remarks circulated again on October 25 and were covered by Deadline, followed by Just Jared on October 26.

By the time she considered the superhero offer, Seyfried had appeared in “Mean Girls,” “Mamma Mia!” and “Les Misérables.”

Family Plans and Stunt Work Helped Shape Her Decision

During the conversation with moderator Kate Erbland, Seyfried said she had been thinking about the family she hoped to have. She also had reservations about the physical side of superhero filmmaking.

She disliked stunts and heights, and found it difficult to perform when so much of her surroundings had to be imagined. “I need something to hold on to,” she explained.

Asked whether she might consider playing a superhero in the future, she joked that she could be interested if the character mostly walked around.

She Had Already Explained Her Makeup and London Concerns

Seyfried had discussed the offer in a separate March 20, 2025 appearance on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. As TheWrap reported, she recalled meeting director James Gunn and considering the part for several days.

At the time, she was working with a trainer who had also trained actors involved in the “X-Men” movies. Hearing about the time those performers spent being transformed into their characters made Gamora’s green makeup seem particularly unappealing.

She imagined spending hours preparing for the camera and removing the makeup afterward, a daily commitment she did not expect to enjoy.

The location was another consideration. Seyfried told Horowitz she did not want to live in London for six months out of the year. She was also interested in Seth MacFarlane’s western comedy “A Million Ways to Die in the West,” which she went on to make.

She nevertheless praised Gunn as a filmmaker and spoke positively about the actors who accepted the Marvel roles. She said Saldaña, Chris Pratt and their castmates appeared to be enjoying an experience that suited them.

Saldaña Returned as Gamora in Four More Marvel Films

Saldaña ultimately played Gamora opposite Pratt’s Peter Quill in the 2014 film. The box office quickly exceeded Seyfried’s expectations. Disney reported a $94.3 million domestic opening weekend, then an August record.

By late December, the film had earned $772.9 million worldwide, according to the studio’s year-end figures published by Boxoffice Pro.

Saldaña returned for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” in 2017 and “Vol. 3” in 2023. She also played Gamora in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” released in 2018 and 2019.

Seyfried received a supporting actress Oscar nomination for “Mank” in 2021, then won a lead actress Emmy in 2022 for portraying Elizabeth Holmes in “The Dropout.”
