Andy Cohen went to pick up his daughter from school and came home with an unsolicited review of how old he looks.
The 58-year-old Bravo host said another child approached him after 4-year-old Lucy’s abridged first day of school on Sept. 10 and asked whether he was her grandfather. Cohen removed his sunglasses, stared into the camera and recalled correcting the child: “No, I’m her daddy!”
He then asked Lucy, who could be heard laughing off camera, whether he was her grandpa. “Dad!” she shouted back. Cohen summed up the experience in the caption of his Instagram video reported by PEOPLE with one word: “Rough….”
The school-pickup encounter apparently was not Cohen’s first grandpa-related hit of 2026. Seven months earlier, his own son Ben had already told him he looked like one.
Lucy’s First Day Came With an Unexpected Question
Cohen said he had just picked Lucy up from her shortened first day when the other child approached him. There was apparently no lengthy buildup or attempt to soften the question.
“I just picked up Lucy from her abridged first day of school and a little kid came up to me and said, ‘Are you her grandpa?’” Cohen recalled. After taking off his sunglasses and explaining that he was Lucy’s father, Cohen immediately brought his daughter into the conversation. “Lucy, am I your grandpa?” he asked. “Dad!” Lucy answered while laughing.
Cohen’s friends were not especially interested in helping him recover. The Real Housewives of Miami star Adriana de Moura called him the “Hottest glampa,” while The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Bronwyn Newport offered, “Life comes atcha fast.” Amy Sedaris added that she gets the grandpa treatment too.
Ben Had Already Hit His Dad With the Grandpa Line
The child at Lucy’s school was actually late to the joke. On the Feb. 13 episode of Andy Cohen’s Daddy Diaries Podcast, Cohen revealed that Ben had already told him he looked like a grandpa.
Cohen had just thrown his son a slime-themed birthday party, only for Ben to deliver what the podcast’s own episode description called a “devastating blow.” Ben was born Feb. 4, 2019, and is now 7. Lucy, born April 29, 2022, turned 4 this spring.
Cohen Became a Father at 50
Cohen has never hidden the fact that he became a parent later than he once imagined. He was 50 when he announced on Watch What Happens Live in December 2018 that he was expecting his first child via surrogate. Ben arrived the following February.
“Family means everything to me and having one of my own is something that I have wanted in my heart for my entire life,” Cohen said during the announcement. He acknowledged that reaching fatherhood had taken him longer than it does many people but called what was ahead the most rewarding chapter he could imagine. Lucy followed via surrogate in April 2022, when Cohen was 53.
In a 2021 interview, he said having a child later was “really fun” and that he tried to stay as relaxed as possible while balancing parenting with his work. By 2025, he was even more emphatic. During Call Her Daddy, Cohen called having children later in life “the greatest thing I’ve ever done” and said becoming a father gave him the family he had wanted.
Fatherhood Changed What Counts as a Win
During a 2023 CBS Sunday Morning conversation with Anderson Cooper, Cohen said parenthood had changed him “in every way,” particularly his priorities and sense of accomplishment.
Simply getting his children fed and out the door could suddenly feel like an achievement. “When I drop him off at school, I’m like, ‘You did it, dude!’” Cohen said of the morning routine with Ben. “That was a rough two-and-a-half hours.”
Cohen also admitted that balancing those jobs with his children can leave him questioning whether he has spent enough time with them. The moments that erase that concern are considerably smaller than anything happening on television.
“If Ben tells me that I’m his best friend or he grabs for my hand to hold it, or he cuddles me extra tight,” Cohen said, “there’s not gonna be a bigger win in my day than that.”
