Anne Hathaway knew almost immediately that taking command of a crowded red carpet photo call was probably going to follow her onto the internet. One night later, she was already apologizing and laughing at herself for exactly that.
The actress went viral after directing photographers during a group photo at the September 29 New York premiere of Verity. With several cast members posing together and photographers calling for their attention from different parts of the press line, Hathaway began organizing where the group would look and when.
During her September 30 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Hathaway called watching the footage “the stuff of nightmares” and described what took over as “mom mode by way of chorus line.” She said she had simply been trying to help as the photographers became frustrated and the atmosphere started to change.
Hathaway ultimately offered a playful apology instead of defending the performance. “I apologize everybody,” she said, before joking that the version of herself who appeared on the carpet had arrived strictly for business.
She Turned the Group Photo Into a Counted Sequence
Rather than allowing the cast to keep turning toward whichever photographer called loudest, Hathaway announced that they would begin on one side of the press line and work their way across.
She then pointed toward different groups of photographers and counted the cast through each position. Fox News described Hathaway as calmly directing where the cast would look while her costars followed along.
Dakota Johnson added her own punchline once Hathaway finished laying out the sequence, joking that she planned to leave afterward.
Hathaway Realized Almost Immediately How the Video Could Look
Hathaway told Fallon that her confidence lasted only until the organizing was finished. Once she stepped out of the moment, she immediately became conscious of how a short clip of her pointing, counting and issuing instructions might play without the surrounding chaos.
That realization produced what she described as an internal cringe. Page Six reported that Hathaway knew Fallon would bring up the viral video and acknowledged that she had switched into an especially businesslike mode while attempting to keep the photo call moving.
‘Verity’ Closed Out Hathaway’s Five-Film Red Carpet Run
The viral exchange happened at the end of an unusually busy professional year for Hathaway. Vogue reported that Verity is her fifth film of 2026, following Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey and The End of Oak Street.
For the New York premiere, the pregnant actress wore a custom black Prabal Gurung gown with a mermaid silhouette and sheer cape detail. Town & Country identified the event as Hathaway’s final red carpet appearance of 2026 as she prepares to welcome her third child with husband Adam Shulman.
Hathaway told Vogue that she had no immediate work obligations after Verity‘s October 2 release and was looking forward to spending time with her family.
She Has Gone Viral for Managing a Crowd Before
After Valentino’s fall 2022 couture show in Rome, she was filmed repeatedly asking excited fans to stay calm while explaining that she could not stop for an individual photo or autograph with everyone waiting.
The clip, remembered for Hathaway telling the crowd “calma,” later resurfaced and became a social-media trend. When W Magazine asked her about it in 2024, Hathaway said the encounter happened while people were still emerging from the pandemic and that she wanted both herself and the fans to be calm enough to have a meaningful interaction.
