Beyoncé was spotted in Philadelphia as Jay-Z previewed his Roots Picnic performance, giving fans a rare offstage look at the couple during a major weekend for hip-hop in the city.

TMZ reported that Beyoncé attended a private preview event before Jay-Z’s scheduled Roots Picnic set. Video shared online showed Jay-Z performing while Beyoncé watched from the side.

The clip drew attention because Beyoncé appeared as a supporter, not a performer. There was no report that she joined Jay-Z onstage, spoke to the crowd, or took part in the preview herself.

TMZ reported that Jay-Z performed “U Don’t Know” during the preview event. Page Six also reported that Beyoncé kept a low profile while watching from the side of the stage as Jay-Z performed for a private crowd.

The moment arrived before Jay-Z’s headlining Roots Picnic appearance with The Roots. For a performer who has become selective with live appearances, even preview footage from the weekend was enough to draw attention.

Beyoncé’s presence added another layer of interest without changing the basic facts of the event. She was there to watch Jay-Z, while the official festival spotlight remained on his performance with The Roots.

Jay-Z’s Roots Picnic Set Has Philadelphia History Behind It

Jay-Z’s Roots Picnic appearance is not a random festival booking. NBC Philadelphia reported that Jay-Z and The Roots were announced as the Saturday headliners for the festival at Belmont Plateau.

The pairing also carries real music history. Jay-Z’s 2001 Unplugged album featured The Roots as his backing band, giving the 2026 Roots Picnic set a reunion angle for longtime hip-hop fans.

That context is stronger than treating the Beyoncé clip as the whole story. Her appearance became the viral detail, but Jay-Z’s set already had weight because of the Roots connection and the Philadelphia setting.

The Festival Lineup Expands the Weekend Beyond One Clip

Pitchfork reported that The Roots would back Jay-Z’s headlining set and appear throughout a lineup featuring Erykah Badu, Kehlani, Brandy, T.I., Mariah the Scientist, De La Soul, Bilal, Corinne Bailey Rae, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Black Thought, Wale, and more.

Roots Picnic is scheduled for May 30 and May 31 at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. The festival’s move to Belmont Plateau gives the 2026 edition a new setting while keeping it tied to the city that shaped The Roots.

For Philadelphia, the Jay-Z booking also connects to a broader hip-hop history. His Roc-A-Fella era included major ties to Philadelphia rap through artists such as Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Peedi Crakk, and Young Chris.
