A Black Crowes concert in Tampa turned tense after frontman Chris Robinson pushed back at fans chanting “USA,” drawing boos from part of the crowd and sending some concertgoers toward the exits.
The moment happened Sunday night during the band’s Southern Hospitality Tour stop at MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre. TMZ reported that the chant began after a screen behind the band showed the group’s crow mascot dressed as Uncle Sam, a visual some fans appeared to read as a patriotic cue.
The show continued, but video from the venue quickly pushed the exchange beyond the amphitheater.
The Chant Started Before “She Talks to Angels”
According to TMZ, the band was preparing to play “She Talks to Angels” when members of the audience started chanting “U.S.A.” Robinson responded from the stage with a sarcastic line, thanking the crowd for the “geography lesson.”
The exchange grew louder when the chant continued. Robinson then told the crowd he did not know what they had to be proud of “right now,” a comment that quickly changed the mood in the venue.
Page Six also reported that the chant began after the Uncle Sam-style mascot appeared on the screen, with Robinson’s remarks drawing boos from some fans.
Some Fans Booed and Some Walked Out
Video from the show captured Robinson addressing the audience after boos broke out.
In a follow-up report, TMZ posted video of concertgoers leaving their seats after the remarks. The outlet noted that plenty of fans stayed, but enough people headed toward the exits for the walkout to become part of the story.
Robinson also responded to the booing from the stage, telling the crowd that some members of the band were not afraid and were not ignorant. The footage showed the audience reaction growing louder as the exchange continued.
The Uncle Sam Image Helped Set Off the Moment
The stage visual made the reaction more complicated than a random chant from the crowd.
Fans saw an Uncle Sam-style version of the Black Crowes mascot and answered with a familiar “USA” chant. Robinson appeared to hear the response as something more loaded than simple crowd participation.
Stereogum reported that the Uncle Sam version of the band’s logo has been used before, including in connection with a 2020 HeadCount voting effort. That context makes the Tampa exchange harder to reduce to one clean cause. The image was already political-adjacent before the chant began.
Robinson Has Not Usually Centered Politics
The incident also stood out because Robinson has not usually been framed as a performer trying to turn every show into a political speech.
Ultimate Classic Rock noted that Robinson recently told Mojo he was not interested in politics, saying he was more interested in poetry, art, people, and experience.
That makes the Tampa exchange look less like a planned speech and more like a spontaneous clash between a frontman and a crowd reading the same stage image differently. Once Robinson challenged the chant, the show moved into a different kind of confrontation.
The Band Is Still Touring Behind a New Album

The Black Crowes are touring after releasing A Pound of Feathers, their latest studio album. The band announced the album for a March 13 release through Silver Arrow Records, following their 2024 comeback album Happiness Bastards.
The Tampa concert was part of the Southern Hospitality Tour, with the band continuing dates after the Florida stop.
The Black Crowes had not issued a public clarification about the Tampa exchange at the time of the reports. For now, the confirmed sequence is the footage itself: an Uncle Sam-style screen image, a “USA” chant, Robinson’s response, boos from part of the crowd, and some fans leaving their seats before the night moved on.
