Chris Pratt says Marvel Studios has moved beyond conversations about bringing Star-Lord back. The actor has confirmed that concrete steps are underway for another appearance as Peter Quill, without identifying the project.
Pratt, 47, shared the update with Mike DeAngelo on The Playlist’s “Bingeworthy” podcast while promoting the second season of “The Terminal List.” His comments were published October 21, the same day the Prime Video thriller returned.
The news, covered by Entertainment Weekly, arrive as Marvel prepares another major reunion in “Avengers: Doomsday.” Among its returning stars is Robert Downey Jr., who will play Doctor Doom after previously portraying Iron Man.
Pratt’s own Marvel run began with “Guardians of the Galaxy” in 2014. He has played Quill in six feature films, including three “Guardians” adventures, two “Avengers” movies and “Thor: Love and Thunder,” with his last appearance coming in 2023.
Pratt Says Marvel Is Acting on Its Star-Lord Promise
During the interview, Pratt pointed to his strong relationships with Marvel executives Kevin Feige and Lou D’Esposito. Their discussions have concerned how to fulfill the pledge made to audiences at the end of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”
Alongside those conversations, he said there had been “hard action taken to make sure that we make good on that promise.” Marvel Studios declined to comment when contacted by TheWrap.
The studio’s next two “Avengers” movies provide obvious settings for familiar heroes to reappear. “Doomsday” opens December 18, 2026, followed by “Secret Wars” on December 17, 2027.
Pratt Previously Pitched His Own Idea for Star-Lord’s Future
Pratt had already brought Feige an idea of his own by the time he appeared on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast on January 22. Promoting “Mercy” then, he described having a strong vision for Quill and wanting to contribute to Marvel’s next decade of storytelling.
That enthusiasm came with flexibility. “I’m happy to do anything they want me to do and will,” he said, before discussing his personal pitch. As Variety noted in revisiting the conversation, he confirmed that Feige had heard the concept.
Pratt also considered who might direct him next. His ideal choice remained James Gunn, who wrote and directed the “Guardians” trilogy, although he acknowledged that having Gunn direct the next chapter was unlikely. Having already worked with Anthony and Joe Russo on the “Avengers” films, he described that experience as different from working with Gunn and said there were other excellent directors to consider.
Quill’s Last Adventure Ended With Breakfast at His Grandfather’s House
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” gave its surviving heroes different futures. Rocket took over leadership of the team, Gamora returned to the Ravagers, and Drax and Nebula stayed on Knowhere to help care for its residents. Peter chose to reconnect with the family he had left behind on Earth.
His reunion with grandfather Jason Quill, played by Gregg Henry, brought him back to the planet where his mother died and from which he was abducted as a child. The final post-credits scene found him eating breakfast, considerably removed from the cosmic battles that had occupied most of his adult life.
The closing message promised that the legendary Star-Lord would return, naming Quill rather than the Guardians collectively. The scene immediately before it, however, concerned the much smaller problem of a neighbor’s lawn.
That exchange was improvised. Speaking with CinemaBlend during the film’s press conference, Pratt and Gunn explained that the director had prompted him to talk about a neighbor. The resulting conversation involved the man’s mother asking Quill to do the mowing.
