Christopher Meloni is heading back to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for its 600th episode, and Mariska Hargitay apparently decided there was no reason to make viewers wait for the official publicity campaign. She posted Meloni directly from the set.
Hargitay shared two Instagram photos on Sept. 22. The first showed her pointing toward a familiar bald head while Meloni stood with his back to the camera. “Who dat?” she wrote. A few hours later, subtlety was over: Hargitay posted a smiling selfie with her longtime costar and captioned it, “happy 600…”
Give Me My Remote reported that Meloni will return as Elliot Stabler in the milestone episode, with TVLine subsequently confirming the casting. SVU finished Season 27 with 594 episodes, meaning Episode 600 will arrive as the sixth installment of Season 28.
The appearance will put Stabler back beside Olivia Benson roughly a year after Meloni’s previous SVU visit and five months after Law & Order: Organized Crime was canceled. Season 28 premieres Oct. 8, but NBC has not announced a broadcast date for Episode 600.

Hargitay’s first Sept. 22 photo turned Meloni’s return into a very short guessing game. She faced the camera and pointed toward Meloni as he stood turned away from it, leaving the back of his head to do most of the identification work. Her follow-up removed whatever mystery remained by putting both actors in the frame together.
Variety reported that the pictures were taken on the SVU set during production on Season 28. The “happy 600…” caption also tied Meloni directly to the landmark installment rather than simply establishing that he had stopped by production.
The return had been kept deliberately vague before that. Showrunner Michele Fazekas told GMMR last month that a returning character was planned for Episode 600 and that “people will be psyched.” She said the staff was planning the milestone “in a big way,” but did not identify the returning actor.
Fazekas had also been open about wanting Meloni around when the story justified it. After Season 27, she told TVLine that scheduling had prevented the show from using him as often as she would have liked. “I want to use him as much as he can,” she said, while adding that she did not want to bring Stabler back simply as a stunt. “It has to mean something.”
Stabler’s Last ‘SVU’ Visit Included an Improvised ‘Love You’
Meloni most recently appeared on SVU in the Season 27 premiere, “In the Wind,” which aired in September 2025. The episode reunited several familiar characters for a memorial to former SVU commanding officer Donald Cragen, including Benson and Stabler.
Stabler was waiting near Benson’s car as she left the gathering. Their brief conversation ended with a hug before Benson climbed into the vehicle, and Stabler told her, “Love you.” That line was not originally in the script. After a viewer asked him about it on social media, Meloni replied, “Ad lib. Made the cut. Ur welcome,” according to PEOPLE.
The scene continued a much longer cycle of Stabler returns. Meloni and Hargitay debuted as Stabler and Benson when SVU premiered in 1999, and Meloni remained a series regular through Season 12. He left the show in 2011, then returned to the franchise in 2021 as Stabler while launching Law & Order: Organized Crime.
His appearances on SVU became occasional guest spots rather than a full-time return, with most of Stabler’s story shifting to the spinoff. Episode 600 will be his first SVU appearance since the Cragen memorial.
‘Organized Crime’ Was Canceled Five Months Before the Reunion

Meloni responded with an emotional Instagram video thanking viewers who had followed Stabler across both shows. He called playing the character “a great ride” and credited viewers with helping give Stabler his longevity. “You gave me a life,” he wrote with the post.
Hargitay’s reaction was equally personal. Speaking after the cancellation, she said she “burst out in tears” when she watched Meloni’s farewell video. She described the role as a major part of his life and said the cancellation felt like the closing of a chapter. Asked whether she expected the two of them to work together onscreen again, she answered, “Somehow, someway, yes.” TVLine reported her remarks in April.
By September, that answer had become considerably less hypothetical. Hargitay had already said she could not imagine SVU reaching Season 30 without Stabler appearing again, but at the time no Season 28 appearance had been confirmed. Her new set photos finally settled that question.
Episode 600 Extends a Record ‘SVU’ Broke Years Ago
The milestone arrives seven years after SVU first entered television’s record books for longevity. NBC renewed the drama for Season 21 in 2019, pushing it beyond the 20-season runs of the original Law & Order and Gunsmoke and making it the longest-running primetime live-action series in American television history.
Hargitay has remained with the series throughout that run as Benson, while Meloni’s history with Stabler has been split between his original 12-season stretch, later SVU guest appearances and five seasons of Organized Crime. That makes his return an unusually fitting piece of casting for an episode built around the show’s own history.
The milestone will also arrive immediately after another notable Season 28 guest appearance. Knicks star Jalen Brunson is scheduled for Episode 5 on Nov. 5, after publicly saying following New York’s NBA championship that appearing on SVU was one of the things he wanted to do next.
Law & Order: SVU Season 28 premieres Thursday, Oct. 8, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. The network has confirmed the season and its schedule but has not yet announced the official airdate for Episode 600.
