Glenn Close has undergone a complete hip replacement. The 79-year-old actress disclosed the procedure on October 20 after fans noticed her using a cane.
She shared the news herself in an Instagram video, speaking directly to followers and thanking them for the affectionate messages they had sent.
“Don’t worry. I’m feeling great,” she said, according to People. She added that her family was around her.
Close did not disclose the date of the operation or give a medical timetable for recovery.

Close said she learned that her left hip was in “really bad shape” before undergoing the operation. She did not identify a specific underlying condition.
Moving around is still difficult, she acknowledged, and she hopes her reliance on the cane will be temporary.
She described her priority as being able to “keep myself in running order” for new challenges.

Close was photographed with the walking aid at the October 15 presentation of La Bola Negra at SVA Theater. NewFest lists the screening as the film’s New York City premiere and the opening-night selection of its 38th annual LGBTQ+ film festival.
Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, who work together as Los Javis, the Spanish-language drama follows three men living in different eras. Its stories connect sexuality, family history and one of Federico García Lorca’s unfinished works.
Close plays Isabelle alongside an ensemble that includes Penélope Cruz, Lola Dueñas and Miguel Bernardeau. The Cannes Film Festival lists Calvo and Ambrossi as recipients of its shared 2026 Best Director award for the film.
During the New York presentation, Close praised the directors’ talent and expressed gratitude for her role in the project, according to LaCrítica. She also spoke about her confidence in their future as filmmakers.
London and New York Premieres Are Next on Her List
Close hopes to fly to London on October 26 for the opening of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, according to Just Jared.
She plays Drusilla Sickle, the Capitol escort for District 12’s tributes during the 50th Hunger Games. In an August interview with Entertainment Weekly, Close compared the character’s elaborate appearance to another of her famous roles, Cruella de Vil in 101 Dalmatians.
She then hopes to return to New York for the second-season premiere of All’s Fair. Hulu lists Close as both a star and an executive producer of the Ryan Murphy legal drama, whose cast also includes Kim Kardashian, Naomi Watts, Niecy Nash-Betts and Sarah Paulson.
Viewers have a separate date to mark: Disney’s November schedule confirms that the new season begins streaming on Hulu on November 4 with three episodes. The series follows a group of attorneys whose professional alliances and personal relationships collide.
Her Honorary Oscar Ceremony Is Approaching
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced in June that Close would receive an honorary Oscar. The recognition comes after an acting career spanning more than five decades.
Close has earned eight competitive Oscar nominations without a win. They span her feature debut in The World According to Garp through Hillbilly Elegy, with Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, Albert Nobbs and The Wife among the performances recognized along the way.
Director Ridley Scott and animator Floyd Norman will also receive honorary Oscars. Producers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler will receive the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.
The statuettes are scheduled to be presented at the 17th Governors Awards on November 15 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood.
