Jason Momoa is no longer attached to star in Sony’s Helldivers movie.
The actor had been set to lead the film adaptation of Arrowhead Game Studios’ sci-fi shooter franchise. Entertainment Weekly reported that Momoa has exited the project, which remains dated for Nov. 10, 2027.
Justin Lin is still attached to direct. The movie is set up at Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, the same screen label behind several recent PlayStation game adaptations.
No reason for Momoa’s exit has been publicly reported. The confirmed change is that Sony now has to recast the lead role before the movie moves further toward production.
Momoa Had Been Attached to Lead the Film

Momoa’s name gave the project a recognizable action lead before Sony announced the rest of the cast. His recent credits include Aquaman, Dune, Fast X, and A Minecraft Movie, another video game adaptation.
The Hollywood Reporter also reported that Momoa is no longer attached to the movie. Entertainment Weekly said it had reached out to Momoa and Sony for comment after the exit report.
Lin’s involvement gives the movie an experienced action director. He has directed several Fast & Furious films and Star Trek Beyond.
Deadline previously reported that Gary Dauberman is writing the screenplay. The producing team includes Lin, Hutch Parker, and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.
The Game Is Built Around Super Earth, Squad Combat, and Friendly Fire
Helldivers 2 is a cooperative third-person shooter from Arrowhead Game Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment. PlayStation describes the game as a fight to defend Super Earth in a hostile galaxy, with players teaming up against alien threats.
The Steam listing describes it as a third-person squad-based shooter with weapons, airstrikes, turrets, and friendly fire. That last detail is not small. Friendly fire, battlefield mistakes, and over-the-top military language are central to how the game plays and why clips from failed missions spread online.
The film will have to translate more than armor, aliens, and explosions. Helldivers is funny because its characters treat Super Earth’s propaganda seriously while the missions around them turn brutal and chaotic.
Helldivers 2 also gives Sony a proven audience. Guinness World Records lists it as PlayStation’s fastest-selling game, with 12 million units sold across PC and PlayStation in the first 12 weeks after its Feb. 8, 2024 launch.
Sony Still Has Time to Recast the Lead
The Nov. 10, 2027 release date gives Sony time to replace Momoa. The next actor does not have to copy his screen presence, but the role needs someone who can carry action scenes while playing the movie’s military absurdity straight.
The game does not revolve around one named hero in the way many adaptations do. Its identity comes from Super Earth, the squads, the orders, the enemy swarms, the friendly-fire disasters, and the joke that everyone onscreen is treating the whole thing as patriotic duty.
For now, the project’s status is straightforward: Momoa is out, Lin remains attached, Dauberman wrote the script, and Sony still has Helldivers dated for November 2027.
