Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance have welcomed their fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance.

The couple announced that Alec was born Sunday morning, July 19, at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. “Usha and the baby are happy and healthy,” they said in a joint statement.

Alec joins the couple’s three older children: Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4. JD and Usha said the siblings were “overjoyed” to meet their new brother.

The Associated Press reported that the previous birth to a sitting vice president occurred in 1870. Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his second wife, Ellen Wade, welcomed their son, Schuyler Colfax III, while Colfax served under President Ulysses S. Grant.

The Vances shared the announcement through the vice president’s official social-media accounts. The statement was signed by both parents and revealed Alec’s full name, birthplace and the condition of mother and baby.

They thanked the doctors, nurses and other staff members at Walter Reed who cared for their family throughout the pregnancy and delivery. The couple also expressed gratitude to the White House Medical Unit for its support.

Alec Joins Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel

Alec is the couple’s third son. Ewan was born in 2017, followed by Vivek in 2020 and daughter Mirabel in 2021, according to Reuters. JD and Usha met while attending Yale Law School, where both graduated in 2013. They married the following year and have generally kept their children away from sustained public attention.

The older children have occasionally accompanied their parents on official travel, including overnight departures aboard Air Force Two. Photographs from those trips have sometimes shown them boarding in pajamas, but the Vances rarely disclose details about their routines, schooling or private lives.

The couple revealed in January that they were expecting another son in July. Their announcement said Usha and the baby were doing well and thanked the military medical professionals assisting the family.

Usha continued making official appearances during the pregnancy, including White House events and episodes of her children’s reading series, Storytime With the Second Lady.
