Kelly Osbourne Says She Didn’t Recognize Herself After Losing Weight While Grieving Ozzy

Kelly Osbourne knew she was struggling after losing her father. What she says she did not understand was how dramatically that grief had begun to affect her physically.

The 41-year-old said she finally recognized the change after seeing a photograph taken during a fitting for the 2026 Grammy Awards. Speaking about the months after Ozzy Osbourne’s death, Kelly told PEOPLE that she had been in so much pain that she could not see what friends and family were seeing.

The photograph frightened her. Kelly said she suddenly noticed how thin she had become and described seeing every bone in her spine. “I couldn’t see what other people saw because I was in so much pain,” she said. “I just saw a broken person.”

She still attended the February ceremony because she wanted to support her mother, Sharon Osbourne, and be present for the tribute to Ozzy. Looking back, Kelly now says she does not think going was the right decision for her own health at the time.

A Grammy Fitting Photo Made Kelly Realize How Much She Had Changed

Friends and relatives had already expressed concern, but Kelly said she had been unable to understand how much her appearance had changed while she was grieving.

That shifted during a Grammy dress fitting. Kelly described the photograph in stark terms, comparing herself to the “Crypt Keeper” and saying, “This is scary. I didn’t know I looked like this.”

Her styling team then tried to choose clothing that would not make her appear even thinner. Kelly also wore a wig that partly covered her face because, she said, she did not want her prominent cheekbones drawing attention.

She Went to the Grammys for Ozzy’s Tribute

The 2026 Grammy Awards honored Ozzy during the In Memoriam segment. Post Malone performed Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” alongside Slash, Duff McKagan, Chad Smith and Andrew Watt while Sharon, Kelly and Jack Osbourne watched from the audience.

The Recording Academy identifies the performance as the official Grammy tribute to Ozzy. Kelly said she wanted to be there both for her mother and for the public celebration of her father’s legacy.

She now views the decision differently. “I don’t think I should have gone,” Kelly said of attending the ceremony. “I wasn’t very well.”

Kelly Says Grief Had Changed Her Relationship With Food

Kelly linked the weight loss directly to the way she was experiencing bereavement. She said the emotional pain became so consuming that normal hunger could barely register, and eating could become difficult.

Her new account follows months of public commentary about her appearance. In December 2025, Kelly pushed back against people asking whether she was ill or accusing her of using Ozempic. “My dad just died, and I’m doing the best that I can,” she said at the time.

More recently, Kelly told PEOPLE that she had indeed been unwell while some of the harshest comments were being posted. She said she is getting better but described recovery as a slow process involving continued work on her mental and physical well-being.

She Tried to Keep Her Grief Away From Her Son

Kelly also described trying to protect her 3-year-old son, Sidney, from seeing the worst moments of her grief. She said she would leave the room rather than cry in front of him and would switch into what she called “Miss Fun Mom” when he came in.

She has said Sidney was extremely close to Ozzy and continues to talk about his grandfather regularly. Kelly has spoken elsewhere about seeing some of her father’s personality and mannerisms in her son.

Kelly is now developing a three-part documentary series about grief and mental health. She has not publicly named the broadcaster, but said she wants to tell more of what happened after Ozzy’s death because much of that period was hidden from the people who only saw her public appearances.

“The person I was before my dad died is dead,” Kelly said. “That person doesn’t exist anymore.”
