Mariska Hargitay has Christopher Meloni back on the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit set. What she is not saying is how long Elliot Stabler plans to stay there.
Hargitay confirmed Meloni’s return after sharing photos from production on Season 28, ending months of speculation about whether Stabler would return following the cancellation of Law & Order: Organized Crime.
EW confirmed that Meloni will reunite with Hargitay’s Olivia Benson for the landmark 600th episode, scheduled to air Nov. 12.
Then Hargitay made the situation considerably more intriguing. During the Roommates Show Block Party in New York, she told Jalen Brunson, “I got my old partner back.” When Brunson immediately asked whether she meant for one episode or “for good,” Hargitay refused to give him an answer.

The tease began Sept. 22 when Hargitay posted a photograph from the SVU set showing herself pointing toward the back of a familiar bald head. She captioned it simply, “WHO DAT,” without identifying Meloni outright.
The mystery did not last long. Variety reported that Hargitay followed the first image with a smiling selfie beside Meloni and the caption “Happy 600…,” directly connecting his return to the show’s milestone episode.
The reunion brings Stabler back to SVU for the first time since the Season 27 premiere. Meloni originated the role alongside Hargitay when the series launched in 1999 and remained a series regular through Season 12 before leaving in 2011.
Hargitay Wouldn’t Say Whether Stabler Is Back for Good
Two days after the set photos, Hargitay gave fans another reason to wonder whether the 600th episode is the beginning rather than the end of Meloni’s Season 28 involvement. While appearing with Brunson at the Sept. 24 Roommates Show Block Party, she told the crowd, “Well, I think you all know who’s back. I got my old partner back.”
PEOPLE reported that Brunson immediately followed with the question viewers wanted answered: “You got him back for an episode or you got him back for good?” Hargitay laughed off the attempt and said she was not going to “tell all.”
No additional episode count has been announced. For now, Meloni’s appearance in Episode 600 is confirmed, while Hargitay’s wording leaves open, but does not confirm the possibility of more Stabler later in the season.
The ‘SVU’ Showrunner Already Wanted More Stabler
Showrunner Michele Fazekas has repeatedly said she sees the Benson-Stabler relationship as important and wants to revisit it when Meloni is available.
TVLine reported that Fazekas wanted to use Meloni more during the previous season but scheduling made that difficult. She also cautioned against bringing Stabler back purely as a stunt, saying his appearances need to have a purpose for the characters.
Fazekas later told TV Insider that she would “love to bring Stabler back around once in a while,” describing the relationship as especially important to Benson and worth exploring now that both characters have changed significantly since their original partnership.
Stabler’s Return Comes After ‘Organized Crime’ Ended

Meloni’s availability changed significantly when Law & Order: Organized Crime was canceled in April after five seasons. The spinoff began on NBC in 2021 before moving to Peacock for its fifth and final season, allowing Meloni to play Stabler full-time again while continuing to cross over with SVU.
After the cancellation, Meloni posted a video thanking viewers for keeping the character alive and welcoming him back to the franchise. Variety reported that he called his time on the spinoff “a great ride” and credited fans with giving Stabler the longevity to return more than two decades after his original debut.
In a later Variety profile, she said she had never wanted Meloni to leave SVU in 2011, while Wolf Entertainment president Peter Jankowski revealed that Meloni had recently visited the show’s Chelsea Piers base camp for a meeting with Fazekas.
Law & Order: SVU returns for Season 28 on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, with episodes streaming the following day on Peacock. Peacock confirms the premiere date and next-day streaming schedule. The 600th episode is scheduled for Nov. 12.
