Nelly says Taylor Swift once paid him $50,000 in cash inside a McDonald’s bag for a guest appearance at her concert.
The 51-year-old shared the story while appearing with his wife, Ashanti, on the October 28 episode of The Breakfast Club. The conversation turned to Swift as the couple discussed how their friendship with her began.
Nelly recalled receiving a call after Swift and her friends had worked out a dance routine to his 2002 hit “Hot in Herre.” She wanted him to come and perform it, offering to arrange the trip around the surprise appearance.
He described the call as unexpected, even though he had known Swift for years. His connections included her father and members of her management team.

Swift was apologetic about the offer, according to Nelly. He recalled her saying, “I don’t really have a budget like that,” before describing the fee, transportation and hotel arrangements. His response, as reported by Complex, was: “Can you put that in a McDonald’s bag?”
At the venue, a member of Swift’s management team handed him the money in the requested bag, he said. Nelly described his performance as lasting about three minutes and emphasized that he would have agreed to appear without charging her.
The arrangements also included his children. As Just Jared reported, Nelly said a G5 private jet collected the family in St. Louis and flew them to Houston. He recalled a presidential suite booked near the venue, believed it was at the Four Seasons and said the reservation covered an entire upper floor.
Swift had told him the plane would be available whenever they were ready to leave. “We never even saw the room. We went from the show right back to the airport,” Nelly said.
Nelly Has Joined Swift on Three of Her Tours
The concert date connected to the payment remains unclear. Just Jared identified the anecdote with Swift’s 2011 Speak Now tour, but contemporaneous coverage of their November 5 Houston appearance identifies the song they performed as “Just a Dream.” Nelly also joined her during the Red tour in 2013 for “Hey Porsche.”
Their performance of “Hot in Herre” with HAIM took place at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis on September 29, 2015, during Swift’s 1989 tour, according to TIME. Swift and the three sisters served as Nelly’s backup dancers.
Swift shared a clip afterward and called the moment “The highlight of our friendship thus far” in a post addressed to HAIM. She also sent her love to Nelly, while the band responded with an excited message about wanting more such moments together.
Ashanti Says Swift Also Inspired Her Approach to Her Own Music
Nelly and Ashanti attended Swift’s July wedding to Travis Kelce, and Ashanti discussed the celebration during a recent visit to Good Day New York. She described the venue as resembling a garden and spoke warmly about the experience.
Ashanti calls Swift “Tay Tay” and acknowledged that Nelly had known her longer. He described himself as a Swiftie. Ashanti has also credited Swift with influencing a career decision: in 2022, she said the singer inspired her to rerecord her self-titled debut album and pursue ownership of her music.
That project will feature in the second season of Nelly and Ashanti: We Belong Together, alongside the couple’s parenting and music careers, according to Peacock’s announcement published by The Futon Critic. All eight episodes arrive on Peacock on November 19.
