Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has produced another possible ransom note nearly eight months after the 84-year-old vanished from her Arizona home.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said its joint task force with the FBI was recently made aware of a new possible note connected to the case. Investigators are trying to determine whether it is credible, Entertainment Weekly reported.
Authorities have not said where the note came from, who received it or what it says. They are also examining social-media comments connected to the latest development.
Nancy, the mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her Catalina Foothills home on January 31st and was reported missing the following day. No arrests have been made.
Investigators Have Not Released the New Note
Unlike two earlier messages that eventually became public, the latest possible ransom note has not been released. The sheriff’s department has said only that investigators recently learned about it and are assessing its credibility.
The task force is also reviewing online comments about the note. Officials have not identified the people behind those comments or said whether they have useful information.
Earlier Ransom Notes Made Conflicting Claims
The new lead arrives after investigators spent months evaluating earlier ransom demands. The Associated Press reported that two notes sent to a Tucson television station in February made sharply different claims about Nancy’s fate.
The first said she was alive and demanded $4 million in cryptocurrency for her release. A second message, sent days later, claimed she had died shortly after being taken.
Authorities later released the notes publicly in hopes that someone would recognize the wording or writing style. The FBI has said some ransom communications were determined to be extortion attempts, while others remained under investigation.
The Search Has Continued for Nearly Eight Months
Investigators have continued treating Nancy’s disappearance as a kidnapping-for-ransom case. Earlier surveillance footage released by the FBI showed a masked person appearing to tamper with a security camera at her home around the time she disappeared.
The FBI’s official case page continues to seek information about Nancy and the person seen in the footage. Her family has also repeatedly appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
