Nicolas Cage says he may join True Detective, naming the HBO drama as a possible next television project.
The Oscar winner brought up the crime series during his “Spotlight” panel at New York Comic Con on Saturday, October 10, Entertainment Weekly reported.
HBO representatives declined to comment on his remarks when contacted by TheWrap.
A role in the anthology’s fifth season would follow Cage’s starring turn in Spider-Noir, the Prime Video series that brought him into live-action superhero television.

Cage explained that he wanted to keep supporting his family without making an uninterrupted string of movies. Another season of television was an option he was considering.
“I think I might do a season of True Detective,” he said. The audience applauded, prompting him to ask: “That’s okay that I’m the first to announce that, right?”
He also joked that his agent had told him, “Don’t say anything,” according to Vulture. “We’ll see if I want to get together with them,” he added.
Reports Have Linked Cage to Detective Henry Logan Since 2025
Deadline reported in August 2025 that Cage was in negotiations to play Henry Logan, a New York detective investigating the season’s central mystery. Cage did not identify his prospective character during the Comic Con exchange.
In May, Cage told Variety: “I’m not signed on to anything, we’re just talking.”
The franchise has previously recruited film actors for its self-contained stories, beginning with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in 2014. Later seasons starred Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali and Jodie Foster.
Season 5 Takes the Mystery to Jamaica Bay
HBO renewed the series on February 22, 2024, four days after True Detective: Night Country concluded. Issa López, who wrote and directed that season, signed a multiyear overall deal that included developing the next installment.
HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi subsequently confirmed Jamaica Bay, New York, as the new setting in a February 2025 Deadline interview. The move takes the series away from Night Country‘s fictional Alaskan town of Ennis. Orsi identified 2027 as the planned release year. A specific premiere date has not been announced.
In a September 2024 interview with TheWrap, López said the next installment would introduce a new case and characters, with connections primarily to Night Country. “It’s the same universe, and the magical realism is my brand, so it will be there,” she said.
