Pat McAfee finally got a real chance to talk to Taylor Swift on Monday night. Unfortunately for him, it happened after he had sweated through his shirt.
The ESPN personality joined Travis Kelce’s family suite after working the Kansas City Chiefs’ September 14 home opener against the Denver Broncos. By the time he reached Swift and Donna Kelce, the temperature had climbed to 95 degrees and McAfee had been wearing a suit for television. “This is how I’m meeting Taylor Swift for the first time really,” he recalled, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Tom Cruise created the opposite problem. McAfee remembered talking with the actor while Cruise wore a leather jacket and somehow showed no visible sign that the Kansas City heat was bothering him.
Then the game took over. McAfee said Swift followed “every snap,” the suite erupted when Kelce broke loose for a 59-yard reception that moved him past Jason Witten on the NFL record book, and McAfee eventually left Arrowhead with the selfie he had worked up the nerve to request.
His First Real Conversation With Swift Started With a Sweaty Hug

McAfee had technically been around Swift before. He attended her July wedding to Kelce at Madison Square Garden, but he described Monday night’s game as the first time he had really gotten to talk with her.
After finishing his work on ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown, McAfee headed to the suite while still dealing with the heat from working outside in a suit.
He first greeted Donna Kelce, then Swift went in for a hug before McAfee could fully process how drenched he was. “This is how I’m meeting Taylor Swift for the first time really,” he said. “I just sweat all over her.”
Swift greeted him warmly, and McAfee later worked up the nerve to ask whether she would take a selfie with him. “She said, ‘Absolutely,’” he recalled. “She was so kind, so hospitable.”
Tom Cruise Apparently Had a Different Relationship With the Heat
Cruise was in the same suite, and his appearance gave McAfee another detail to bring back to his show the next day. McAfee said Cruise was wearing a leather jacket despite the Kansas City heat and still appeared completely dry. “He had a leather jacket on and didn’t have a single drop or bead of sweat anywhere,” McAfee said.
After Cruise walked away, McAfee said he asked the people around him how that was possible. The answer he remembered getting was simple: “He’s the movie star. He doesn’t sweat, dude.”
Entertainment Weekly reported that Kansas City reached 95 degrees shortly before kickoff, while McAfee had been working outdoors in television clothes before entering the suite.

The celebrity traffic did not distract Swift from the field, at least in McAfee’s telling. He said she was “all in” and following “every snap”. The clearest example came in the third quarter. Patrick Mahomes found Kelce on a 59-yard completion that carried Kansas City to the Denver 4-yard line and produced the biggest play of Kelce’s night.
The catch also moved Kelce past longtime Dallas Cowboys star Jason Witten into second place on the NFL’s career receiving-yards list for tight ends. Kelce entered the game with 13,002 yards and needed 45 to pass Witten’s 13,046. He now trails only Tony Gonzalez.
The Chiefs’ official game log credits Kelce with three receptions for 71 yards in Kansas City’s 31-10 win, with the 59-yarder accounting for most of that total. McAfee remembered the entire suite erupting during the play. “That was the most ‘into it’ suite we’ve ever been in,” he said. “Watching them experience a game was fantastic.”
