Paul Pierce believes LeBron James should return to the franchise where his NBA career began as the four-time champion weighs his next move.
The Boston Celtics legend told TMZ Sports that the Cleveland Cavaliers represent James’ strongest option for his record-setting 24th season.
Pierce made the recommendation during Derek Fisher’s third annual Be Better Foundation Celebrity Golf Tournament. When asked whether James should consider Boston instead, the former Celtics star immediately rejected the suggestion.
James is an unrestricted free agent after allowing his Los Angeles Lakers contract to expire. He has confirmed that Cleveland and the Miami Heat are among the teams under consideration but has not announced where he will play during the 2026-27 season.
Pierce Immediately Picked Cleveland
Asked where he would like to see James play next, Pierce did not hesitate. “I think his best fit is Cleveland,” he said.
The interviewer then suggested the Celtics, who spent years battling James’ Cavaliers and Heat teams during Pierce’s career. Pierce responded, “No, we don’t want him on the Celtics.”
A Cleveland Return Would Combine History With a Contending Roster
The Cavaliers selected James with the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. He played seven seasons in Cleveland before joining Miami in 2010, then returned in 2014 and led the franchise to its first NBA championship two years later.
A third tenure would bring James back close to his hometown of Akron while giving him another opportunity to compete with an established playoff team. Cleveland reached the 2026 Eastern Conference Finals before losing to the eventual champion New York Knicks.
Donovan Mitchell agreed to a four-year maximum extension with the Cavaliers in July. Cleveland also acquired James Harden from the Los Angeles Clippers during the 2025-26 season, although Harden declined his player option and remained in negotiations over a new multiyear contract.
James Has Not Revealed His Next Team

James informed the Lakers that he planned to continue his career elsewhere after eight seasons in Los Angeles. His departure ended a run that included the franchise’s 2020 championship.
During a live recording of his Mind the Game podcast at Fanatics Fest, James praised the Lakers organization but declined to answer questions about his destination.
He acknowledged hearing recruiting pitches involving Philadelphia and Miami and confirmed that both Cleveland and the Heat remained possible destinations. He described himself as entering the final stages of his career without saying whether the coming season would be his last.
