North Little Rock Animal Services is warning residents about scammers posing as shelter officials and asking pet owners for money or financial information for fake licenses.
The scam uses the shelter’s name and likeness, according to THV11.
Animal Services said legitimate licenses are metal tags issued by the city or participating veterinarians, not a random online payment request from someone claiming to represent the shelter.
The Fake Request Uses A Real Pet Rule
North Little Rock’s animal control page says all dogs and cats, including indoor pets, must receive a yearly rabies vaccination from a licensed veterinarian and must also have a current city license.
The city says residents can buy the yearly license at a veterinarian’s office or at the North Little Rock Animal Shelter.
The scam appears to borrow that real requirement and turn it into a fake payment demand. A pet owner who knows licenses are required may be more likely to believe a message that sounds official.
Animal Services said residents should not send money or financial information to anyone who contacts them unexpectedly about a pet license.
The Real License Comes As A Metal Tag
THV11 reported that the shelter is telling pet owners to watch for fake licensing messages that ask for payment or financial details.
North Little Rock’s website says the city license can be purchased through a veterinarian or the animal shelter. The city lists Animal Services at 501-791-8577.
Residents who receive a suspicious message should contact the shelter directly through that number instead of replying to the message, clicking a payment link, or sending card information.
Officials Say To Contact The Shelter Directly
The shelter is asking residents to verify any license-related request before paying.
A legitimate license should come through the city, the shelter, or a participating veterinarian. It should not come from an unexpected message asking for money or financial information.
Pet owners who already shared payment details should contact their bank or card company and save screenshots, phone numbers, emails, payment handles, and messages tied to the request.
Call Animal Services at 501-791-8577 or use the veterinarian’s office before paying for a pet license.
