Quality Control Music co-founder and CEO Pierre “P” Thomas is alive and hospitalized, the label confirmed after reports that the 45-year-old music executive suffered a heart attack.
Rolling Stone and Variety reported on Aug. 21 that Thomas was receiving medical care. Quality Control subsequently issued its own statement confirming his hospitalization and asking supporters to give his family privacy.
The heart attack, Las Vegas hospital and intensive-care details originated with TMZ, which cited sources with direct knowledge of the situation.
Thomas founded the Atlanta-based label with Kevin “Coach K” Lee in 2013. Quality Control became one of hip-hop’s most influential companies by developing and working with artists including Migos, Lil Baby, Lil Yachty and City Girls before its parent company was acquired by HYBE America in 2023.

“We want to clarify that Pierre ‘P’ Thomas is alive and currently hospitalized, receiving medical care,” Quality Control said in an Instagram statement on Aug. 21.
The label continued by asking people to keep Thomas and his family in their thoughts and prayers and to give them “the privacy and space they need during this time.” It also thanked supporters for their “concern, support, prayers, and loving energy.” iHeart reported that some blogs had circulated false claims that the executive had died before Quality Control issued its clarification.
TMZ Reported a Heart Attack and Intensive Care Treatment
TMZ reported that Thomas suffered a heart attack and was being treated in the intensive care unit of a Las Vegas hospital. Sources described by the outlet as having direct knowledge said members of his family were with him and consulting with doctors about the next steps in his care.
The label confirmed that Thomas is hospitalized and receiving treatment, but it did not itself identify a heart attack, say that he was in the ICU or name the hospital where he was being treated.
Thomas and Coach K Built Quality Control Into an Atlanta Hip-Hop Powerhouse
Thomas and Lee formed Quality Control Music in March 2013, according to the label’s official history. Thomas became CEO and Lee served as COO as they built a business intended to handle more of an artist’s career internally.
The founders hired their own radio and promotion staff and moved into publishing and management. They also invested $1 million and spent approximately a year building a West Atlanta headquarters containing offices and four recording studios.
Migos became one of Quality Control’s defining early successes, with the label later establishing relationships with Lil Yachty, Lil Baby and City Girls. The company expanded beyond recorded music through management, sports and film and television operations, including Quality Films.
Thomas and Lee’s influence earned them major industry recognition. PEOPLE noted that Billboard named them Executives of the Year in 2018, and in 2023 they received the publication’s first peer-voted R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players’ Choice Award.
HYBE America Bought Quality Control’s Parent Company for $300 Million
Quality Control entered a new phase in February 2023 when HYBE America agreed to acquire QC Media Holdings, the parent company encompassing the founders’ music, sports and entertainment businesses.
The transaction was valued at approximately $300 million. Contemporary reporting put the deal at $250 million in cash plus $50 million in new HYBE stock issued to Thomas and Lee. The acquisition placed the Atlanta company under the broader HYBE America operation while keeping its founders involved in running Quality Control.
