Tom Holland is speaking more plainly about the drinking habits that came before his sobriety.
In a new GQ cover story with The Odyssey costars Matt Damon and Robert Pattinson, Holland reflected on the years before he quit drinking in January 2022. People reported that the actor described his old version of “wild” as lonely and “un-Hollywood,” saying he could sit alone in a hotel room, finish a minibar, and go to work the next day.
The detail gave his sobriety story a sharper shape. Holland was not describing a flashy celebrity party stretch. He was describing a private routine that had become too easy to repeat.

Holland Said His Drinking Did Not Look Like a Hollywood Spiral
Holland’s comments came after Pattinson joked in GQ about how long the Spider-Man actor had stretched out his “crazy years.”
Holland pushed back on the idea that his past was defined by nightclubs or a public party life. He said he was “always pretty sensible,” but that he drank too much.
His example was quieter: drinking alone in a hotel room, emptying a minibar, and still reporting to work the next day.
The Minibar Detail Made the Story Specific
The most striking part of Holland’s latest comments was not a dramatic public incident.
It was the ordinary image of drinking alone while traveling for work. People reported that Holland said his version of “wild” was sitting in a hotel room by himself, finishing a minibar, and showing up the next morning.
TMZ noted that Holland has spoken before about how difficult his first sober year was. The new interview adds another detail to a story he has been sharing in pieces over the last several years.
Dry January Became a Longer Change
Holland has said his sober journey began with Dry January in 2022.
What started as a one-month break from alcohol became something bigger after he realized how difficult it was to get through the month without drinking.
In a 2023 interview on On Purpose with Jay Shetty, Holland said the difficulty scared him. ABC News reported that he later extended the challenge to his birthday on June 1. By then, he said he felt happier, healthier, clearer, and better able to handle problems.
Sobriety Became Part of a Larger Reset
Holland also connected this period of his life to a shift in how he approaches work.
In the GQ interview, he said he needed time at home to grow personally and to make sure he still loved what he was doing. That break came before a major return to large-scale filmmaking.
Holland stars as Telemachus in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which is scheduled to open July 17, 2026. He is also set to return as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which Marvel lists for July 31, 2026.
That makes the GQ interview part of a larger professional moment: Holland is talking about a personal reset while preparing for two of the biggest releases of his career.
He Later Turned Sobriety Into Bero

Holland’s sobriety has also become part of his business life.
He launched Bero, a non-alcoholic beer brand, after realizing how useful a better alcohol-free option might have been during the early part of his own sober journey.
People reported that Holland said his first sober year was difficult and that having a product like Bero at the time would have made it easier. He has since expanded the brand with non-alcoholic shandies inspired by Zendaya, who does not drink alcohol.
