Tom Holland had a personal answer ready when an internet question asked whether Zendaya’s character in The Odyssey was romantically interested in Matt Damon’s Odysseus.
Holland joined Damon, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson for a WIRED interview in which the cast responded to 50 frequently searched questions about Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic.
After reading, “Did Athena love Odysseus romantically?” Holland immediately answered, “No, because she’s married to me.” Damon backed him up with, “Yep. Good answer,” as Hathaway laughed and Pattinson smiled.
Holland confirmed during a June interview with Esquire that the longtime couple had married, saying their relatives knew AI-generated wedding photographs circulating online were fake “because they were all there” for the real ceremony, Entertainment Weekly reported.
Matt Damon Avoided Spoiling Athena and Odysseus’ Connection
The cast returned to Athena’s role when Holland read another question asking why the goddess chooses Odysseus. Damon was more guarded about how Nolan’s movie handles their relationship.
“This is difficult in the context of our movie without giving things away,” he said. “Because does Athena choose Odysseus or does Odysseus choose Athena?”
“Spoiler alert,” Damon added. “That’s all we can say.”
Another question asked what Athena teaches Telemachus, the character played by Holland. Damon answered, “True love,” and Holland agreed with a quick, “Yeah.”
Holland and Zendaya Play Different Parts of Odysseus’ Family Story
Zendaya’s Athena serves as a divine protector and guide to Odysseus as he attempts to return to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Holland plays Telemachus, the son Odysseus left behind with his wife, Penelope, played by Hathaway.
Pattinson appears as Antinous, one of the suitors competing to marry Penelope during Odysseus’ prolonged absence. When the WIRED interview asked how Antinous treats Telemachus, Holland answered, “Terribly,” while Pattinson argued that his character was initially nice before Telemachus became “too big for your boots.”
The Odyssey, which opened in theaters July 17, also stars Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page and Samantha Morton.
Holland and Zendaya will return to theaters together two weeks later as Peter Parker and MJ in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Sony Pictures is releasing the fourth Holland-led Spider-Man movie in the United States on July 31.
