Donald Trump shared a humorous story at the White House about how autocorrect repeatedly changed Melania Trump’s name to “Melody,” leading to online ridicule and confusion.
The president made the remarks during an event honoring military mothers ahead of Mother’s Day, where he drifted into a lighthearted explanation about his experiences posting on social media.
Trump said the issue stemmed from the autocorrect and predictive text features on the devices he uses to post messages online.
Trump Says Autocorrect Turned “Melania” Into “Melody”
Speaking to the audience, Trump explained that every time he attempted to type Melania’s name into a post, the device would automatically replace it.
“I love the name Melody because for a long time, you know, they have spell correct and word correct on these crazy machines that we use to put out truths or they used to be called tweets,” Trump said.
“And every time I wrote ‘Melania,’ it would correct to ‘Melody.’”
Trump joked that because he types quickly, he sometimes failed to notice the correction before posting.
“And I work very fast, very fast,” he continued. “I’d say, ‘Melania is fantastic. Happy Mother’s Day Melania. Our great first lady, Melania.’ But it would spell correct and word correct to Melody.”
According to Trump, those mistakes quickly became ammunition for critics online.

“I Would Get Absolutely Decimated”
Trump told the audience the typo incidents triggered waves of mockery from opponents who accused him of not knowing his wife’s name.
“And sometimes I wouldn’t proofread it,” Trump said. “And I would get just absolute decimated.”
“He said he didn’t know the name of his wife. He keeps calling her Melody.” Trump then blamed the technology itself, jokingly asking what was wrong with the device. “And I said, what the hell is wrong with this machine? I didn’t know about that little feature.”
The president’s remarks drew laughter from parts of the crowd as he leaned into the story rather than brushing it aside.
Trump Says the Military Helped Him Fix the Problem
Trump eventually tied the story back to the military audience in attendance, saying members of the military helped him figure out how to stop the autocorrect issue from happening.
“You know who corrected it? The military,” Trump said. “I said, come here. You got to correct this. You’re killing me.”
He added that Melania had been called “Melody” many times because of the recurring typo issue.
“She’s been called Melody a lot,” he joked before mock apologizing to the audience for spending time explaining the story. “Anyway, I had to explain it to you this way. I stood up here to explain it to you. I apologize.”
A More Casual Side of Trump Emerges at Formal White House Event
The comments stood out because they offered a more casual and self-deprecating side of Trump during what was otherwise a formal White House ceremony honoring military mothers.
Trump often uses public events to mix policy remarks with personal stories, improvisation, and humor. His supporters frequently view those moments as part of his authenticity and unscripted style, while critics argue they can distract from the seriousness of official events.
The “Melody” explanation also revisited a small but widely discussed internet controversy that had circulated after previous posts appeared to misspell Melania’s name.
At the time, critics mocked the posts online, while supporters argued the errors were likely caused by autocorrect or rushed typing.
Trump’s latest remarks appear to confirm that the issue had become irritating enough for him to publicly address it himself.
Do you think Trump’s “Melody” explanation clears up the old social media confusion, or do you think critics will continue to mock the typo incidents anyway?
