Alexa Demie has built one of Euphoria’s most recognizable characters, but she has never treated constant visibility as part of the job.
The actress addressed speculation about whether she plans to step away from acting after the HBO drama’s Season 3 finale. E! News reported that Demie shut down the idea that she is retiring, while still making clear that she does not plan to turn her next career moves into public content.
Demie Said She Has Goals, but She Is Keeping Them Private
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Demie said there are things she wants and goals she is working toward, but she is choosing not to share those plans publicly.
That answer is not a retirement announcement. It is a boundary.
Demie told the outlet that she likes her life the way it is and would not change it. The comment fits the way she has handled fame throughout Euphoria: visible enough for Maddy Perez to become a defining TV character, but private enough that fans often turn her silence into a theory.
The Retirement Rumor Came From Old Comments
The retirement talk did not come from a new statement saying she was finished with acting.
E! News traced the speculation back to comments Demie made on a 2020 episode of The A24 Podcast with Nathan Fielder, where she discussed an earlier period when auditions felt limiting and discouraging.
Demie recalled being in casting rooms where lead roles did not seem open to Latina actresses like her. She said she kept having experiences that made her feel shut out, but she also clarified that she never truly saw herself quitting.
Her mindset, she said, was closer to proving people wrong than walking away.
Her Casting as Maddy Was Not Treated as Obvious

Demie’s path to Maddy Perez was not presented as effortless in the Hollywood Reporter interview.
Just Jared reported that Euphoria creator Sam Levinson said HBO initially did not think Demie was right for the role because the network had imagined a blonde cheerleader.
Levinson said he believed Demie was right for Maddy and tried to help her soften how executives might initially read her in the room. Demie later described the final callback as a turning point, saying it became less about simply booking the job and more about being seen.
That background gives her comments about privacy and control more weight. Demie was not handed one of Euphoria’s most memorable roles as the obvious choice. She had to fight through assumptions before Maddy became inseparable from the show’s image.
Maddy Made Demie Famous Without Making Her Overexposed
Demie’s performance as Maddy became one of the show’s clearest style and attitude signatures. The character’s sharp beauty looks, guarded confidence, and complicated relationship with Nate Jacobs helped make Maddy one of the series’ most discussed figures.
That visibility also created a strange split around Demie herself. Viewers saw Maddy everywhere online, but Demie kept her own life and career updates selective.
That gap is where the retirement rumor grew. Some fans treated the lack of constant public movement as proof that Demie was stepping away, when her new comments point to something different: she wants to decide what people get to know.
Demie Pushed Back on the Demand for Constant Access
Demie’s larger point was about control. She questioned why people assume every actor wants maximum fame, constant access, and a public explanation for every career decision.
“What happened to my ability to choose?” she said, according to E! News.
That is the clearest answer in the interview. Demie is not saying she does not want to work. She is saying she does not want privacy to be mistaken for disappearance, and she does not want her next move turned into public property before she is ready to share it.
