Savannah Guthrie says Lady Gaga correctly predicted that she was having a daughter months before Vale was born — and claimed the unborn baby had supplied the answer herself.
Guthrie recalled the exchange on the September 14 episode of Today while discussing Gaga with Jenna Bush Hager. The encounter happened in 2014, when Guthrie interviewed the singer while pregnant with her first child.
“I think you’re having a girl,” Gaga told her, according to Entertainment Weekly. Guthrie and husband Mike Feldman had chosen not to find out the baby’s sex, so she asked Gaga how she knew. “She told me,” Gaga replied.
Guthrie gave birth to daughter Vale on August 13, 2014. She brought up the exchange again after news broke that Gaga and fiancé Michael Polansky had welcomed their first child.
Gaga Made the Prediction Before Guthrie Knew She Was Having a Girl
Guthrie interviewed Gaga on Today on March 21, 2014, shortly after publicly revealing her pregnancy. She and Feldman had decided to wait until the birth to learn whether they were having a boy or a girl. More than 12 years later, Guthrie still remembered Gaga telling her the baby was a girl. When Bush Hager heard the story on Monday, she was surprised that Vale, whose godmother she is, had apparently had an encounter with Gaga before she was even born.
“What! Vale and Lady Gaga had a connection?!” Bush Hager asked. “I know!” Guthrie replied. “They had a psychic message in utero.” The prediction turned out to be right. Vale Guthrie Feldman was born that August, five months after Guthrie married Feldman in Arizona.
Guthrie Became a Mother at 42
Guthrie and Feldman married on March 15, 2014. During their wedding reception, she told guests that she was four months pregnant, then announced both the marriage and pregnancy publicly on Today. Guthrie was 42 when Vale was born. She later welcomed son Charley in December 2016 at age 44.
She has spoken openly about becoming a mother later than she expected. In a 2024 interview with PEOPLE, Guthrie said she had “long given up hope” of having children before becoming a mother.
She has also said that she would have welcomed another child if circumstances had been different. During a 2025 conversation with Bush Hager, Guthrie said she “would have had a third in a heartbeat” but felt she was “up against the clock.”
Gaga Has Now Welcomed Her First Child
Guthrie recalled the 2014 prediction after Gaga and Polansky became parents themselves. A source confirmed to PEOPLE in September that the couple had welcomed their first child. Gaga and Polansky have not publicly disclosed the baby’s name, sex or exact date of birth. A source later told PEOPLE that the couple had taken time away from work during the summer to spend with their newborn.
Gaga had spoken for years about wanting children. During a 2025 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Colbert asked about what she hoped to pursue after her work in music and acting. “What I really want is to be a mom,” Gaga said. “That’s my next starring role, I hope.” She had expressed the same goal years earlier.
In 2020, Gaga said she was excited to have children and looked forward to becoming a mother. By the time Guthrie retold their 2014 exchange on Today, Gaga had become a parent herself, while the baby she once predicted would be a girl was now 12 years old.
