Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski kept the end of their marriage private long enough that their breakup announcement arrived after they had already adjusted to life apart.
The actors confirmed on September 15th that they have separated after nine years of marriage. In a joint statement provided to PEOPLE, they said they had been separated “for a while” and had concluded that the decision was right for them and their family.
They did not give an exact separation date or explain what led to the decision. Seyfried, 40, and Sadoski, 50, share two children: daughter Nina, 9, and son Thomas, 5, who was born in September 2020.
The announcement also arrived with an unusual sign of how they are handling the split. Hours before the news became public, Seyfried was still posting Sadoski on Instagram Stories, calling him “#reptiledad” as he posed with one of the family’s reptiles.

Seyfried and Sadoski did not frame the separation as a public dispute. Their statement emphasized that living apart has worked for their family and ended with a line that made their continued connection explicit: “We’ve got each other forever—and it’s GOOD.”
Just Jared reported the separation shortly after PEOPLE published the couple’s statement, noting that they had quietly been apart before announcing anything publicly.
The wording fits the unusually private way Seyfried and Sadoski handled much of their relationship. They rarely made their children part of their public-facing careers and spent much of their family life away from Los Angeles on their property in upstate New York.
There Were Clues, but None Confirmed the Split Until Now
Questions about their marriage had already started circulating when Seyfried appeared at the Toronto International Film Festival this month without her wedding ring. That absence alone did not establish that the couple had separated.
On the same day the breakup was announced, Seyfried shared a photograph of Sadoski with their bearded dragon Romeo and tagged his account with “#reptiledad.” She also shared reflective prose on her Stories, although she did not explicitly connect those words to the separation.
The couple’s own statement is therefore the clearest evidence of what changed. It confirms that the separation had already happened sometime before September 15th while leaving the timing and reasons private.
Their Marriage Started With an Elopement Nobody Knew About
Seyfried and Sadoski first met in 2015 while starring together in the Off-Broadway play The Way We Get By. Their relationship remained professional at the time, and they later reunited while making The Last Word.
They began dating in 2016, became engaged that September and quietly married in March 2017. The wedding was so private that Sadoski publicly revealed it afterward during an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden.
He told Corden that they had gone into the country with an officiant and married with virtually nobody else around. CBS News reported at the time that even Corden appeared surprised when Sadoski flashed his wedding ring and disclosed that the ceremony had already happened.
Their daughter Nina arrived less than two weeks later. They welcomed their second child, a son, in September 2020 after keeping that pregnancy largely out of public view as well.
They Continued Supporting Each Other’s Work During the Marriage
Sadoski was beside Seyfried through one of the biggest stretches of her career, including her Emmy-winning performance as Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout. When she won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie in 2022, Seyfried thanked her husband, parents, children and dog Finn from the stage.
She later explained that Sadoski had encouraged her to speak directly to their children during the acceptance speech because they were the people who mattered most to her.
The couple also worked together on humanitarian causes, particularly organizations supporting children affected by war. When their son was born in 2020, they chose INARA and War Child to announce the news rather than making a conventional celebrity birth announcement.
Their September 15th statement does not say what comes next legally or give an exact date for when the marriage ended in practice. What it does make clear is that their separation had already been underway before the public knew about it.
