Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s long-running custody chapter has formally reached its endpoint now that their youngest children are adults.

InStyle reported that twins Knox Léon and Vivienne Marcheline turned 18 on July 12, ending any remaining custody agreement between Jolie and Pitt. AOL also carried an update on the former couple’s children as the family reached the milestone.

The legal custody phase that began after Jolie filed for divorce in 2016 is now closed.

Knox and Vivienne are the youngest of Jolie and Pitt’s six children. With their 18th birthday, the custody arrangement that once governed the former couple’s minor children no longer applies.

The milestone comes nearly 10 years after Jolie filed for divorce. Jolie and Pitt finalized their divorce settlement in December 2024, but custody remained part of public coverage because the twins were still minors until now.

Jolie and Pitt share Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne.

Two of Jolie and Pitt’s older children are moving through the legal process to drop “Pitt” from their names.

People reported that Zahara and Maddox published legal notices in the Los Angeles Daily Journal as part of California’s name-change process. Zahara is requesting the name Zahara Marley Jolie, while Maddox is requesting the name Maddox Chivan Jolie.

Their requests have not yet been granted. People reported that Maddox’s hearing is scheduled for Sept. 14, while Zahara’s is scheduled for Sept. 28.

Shiloh legally changed her name to Shiloh Jolie in 2024 after filing on her 18th birthday. Vivienne, meanwhile, was credited as Vivienne Jolie in the Playbill for The Outsiders, the Broadway musical she helped her mother produce.

The Family Split Has Remained Publicly Complicated

Jolie and Pitt’s separation followed years together and became one of Hollywood’s most closely watched family and legal stories.

People reported in December 2024 that the former couple had reached a divorce settlement after more than eight years of legal fighting.

At the time, Jolie’s lawyer said she had focused on finding peace and healing for the family. Jolie’s side has previously emphasized the emotional difficulty of the separation and her focus on the children’s well-being.
