Michelle Obama was in the audience for one of the year’s biggest music comebacks, and she arrived in Paris wearing a designer whose work has become a recurring presence in her wardrobe.

The former first lady attended Céline Dion’s Sept. 12 opening night in a slate-gray Diotima maxi dress. Vogue photographed Obama arriving in the look, which featured a low curved neckline, sculpted drop-waist bodice and deep navy velvet accents.

The dress came from Diotima, the New York-based label founded in 2021 by Jamaican designer Rachel Scott. Obama had already worn Scott’s work through another major American fashion house this summer, choosing Proenza Schouler where Scott serves as creative director for her July appearance at the Essence Festival of Culture.

The Sept. 12 performance was the singer’s first full concert in more than six years, and Obama joined an audience that also included Oprah Winfrey, Shania Twain and designer Haider Ackermann.

Obama Chose Diotima for Dion’s Comeback Night

Obama kept most of the outfit within the same muted palette. Her auburn-brunette braids were swept into a loose, low ponytail. A baby-pink lip and pastel-blue manicure added the only obvious softer color notes to the otherwise tonal look.

The designer behind it has built Diotima around a combination of Caribbean craft and structured contemporary fashion. Diotima says all of its crochet is made in Jamaica, with Scott designing and producing the wider collection between Jamaica and New York.

Scott launched the company in 2021 after years working across different parts of the fashion industry. Her collections regularly place Jamaican handcraft alongside tailoring, embellishment and materials sourced from European mills.

Obama had already turned to Scott’s work earlier this summer. On July 3, she joined Keke Palmer at the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans for a live conversation centered on her book The Look, personal style and the choices behind her public wardrobe.

For that appearance, she wore a dark Proenza Schouler maxi dress from Scott’s Fall 2026 collection. Vogue noted that the Essence look came from Scott’s first full collection for Proenza Schouler after she took over the creative direction of the New York house. Scott had been appointed to the role in 2025 after founders Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez departed.

Essence says Obama used the conversation with Palmer to discuss fashion, identity and The Look, including the way clothing became part of her public communication during and after her years in the White House.

Dion’s Return Drew a Celebrity Crowd to Paris

Dion opened her new Paris engagement at the Plenitude Arena in Nanterre with her first complete concert since March 2020.AP reported that Dion performed 25 songs over more than two hours in front of approximately 30,000 people.

She returned publicly at the 2024 Paris Olympics and made other individual appearances afterward, but the Sept. 12 marked her first full concert in more than six years.

Obama was one of several high-profile guests. Vogue identified Winfrey, Twain and Ackermann among the audience, adding another layer of celebrity attention to the opening night.

The Diotima Look Capped Three Very Different Fashion Moments

On Sept. 10, she attended the U.S. Open women’s semifinals in a red, white and navy Chanel shirtdress with vertical stripes and gold buttons. Vogue photographed her at Arthur Ashe Stadium during the match between Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina.

The following day required an entirely different tone. Obama joined Barack Obama and other former presidents and first ladies at the National September 11 Memorial in Manhattan for the 25th anniversary of the attacks.

For that commemoration, she wore a floor-length brown Ferragamo jersey dress with twisted tan leather detailing at the sleeves, silver jewelry and a memorial pin, with her braids gathered into a loose low plait. By Sept. 12, she was in Paris in Rachel Scott’s Diotima for Dion’s opening night.
