Ariana Grande’s new “Petal” music video has reignited an uncomfortable public debate over her appearance, despite the singer’s repeated requests for people to stop speculating about her body and health.
After Grande released the seven-minute visual alongside her eighth studio album, Petal, some viewers expressed concern about what they perceived as additional weight loss.
Other fans immediately pushed back, arguing that the reactions amounted to body-shaming disguised as concern.

Grande released the “Petal” video and its accompanying album on July 31. Directed by Christian Breslauer, the black-and-white short film opens with a graphic-content warning before introducing Grande as a hopeful actress named Pepper.
Page Six reported that several viewers focused on Grande’s appearance during scenes in which she wears black leggings, an off-the-shoulder top and a platinum-blonde hairstyle.
Some social-media users said she appeared noticeably thinner and expressed concern for her well-being. Others criticized those reactions, arguing that viewers could not determine her health from a professionally styled music video and should not publicly analyze her size. Grande has not responded directly to the latest comments.
The ‘Petal’ Video Centers on Being Judged
Grande’s character arrives at a Hollywood audition and sits among several other hopeful performers. She repeatedly changes her clothes, hair and presentation, but the panel of men judging her continues to reject each version.
They describe her as “not good enough,” “desperate,” “unmarketable,” “unattractive” and “inauthentic.” One man tells her that he misses the way she used to be, while another questions her personality. People reported that a flower growing beside Grande’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star begins to wither after each rejection.
The story eventually takes a graphic turn when a shadowy figure appears and Grande’s character picks up a chainsaw. She attacks the panel before returning to the waiting room covered in blood, where the other women applaud her. The filmmakers then reveal that the violent sequence was itself a performance. A director praises Grande’s work, screaming fans wait outside and the flower beside her star has completely withered.

Grande addressed similar scrutiny during an emotional 2024 interview conducted with her Wicked costar Cynthia Erivo. French journalist Salima Jeanne Poumbga asked Grande how she managed the pressure women face to look perfect while living under intense public scrutiny.
Grande said she had heard “every version” of what people believed was wrong with her since becoming famous as a teenager. “There’s a comfortability that people have with commenting on people’s bodies that I think is really dangerous,” she said in the interview.
Grande explained that remarks about someone looking thinner or heavier could be uncomfortable regardless of whether they appeared online or came from a relative during a family gathering. She also objected to strangers making assumptions about another person’s appearance, health or private circumstances without having the information needed to understand them.
“I’ve been kind of doing this in front of the public and kind of been, you know, a specimen in a Petri dish, really, since I was 16 or 17,” she said. Grande added that she had learned to protect herself from that “noise” by refusing to give it space in her life.
She Asked Fans to Be ‘Gentler’ in 2023

Grande had already responded to concerns about her weight in an official TikTok video posted in April 2023. She asked people to become “gentler and less comfortable commenting on people’s bodies,” regardless of whether the remarks concerned someone being healthy, unhealthy, larger, smaller, attractive or unattractive.
Grande also challenged comparisons between her appearance at that time and earlier periods of her career. “The body that you’ve been comparing my current body to was the unhealthiest version of my body,” she said.
Grande explained that she had been taking antidepressants, drinking while using them and eating poorly during what she described as some of the lowest points of her life. She acknowledged that she should not have been required to disclose those personal details but hoped her openness would demonstrate why visible weight cannot reliably indicate whether someone is healthy or struggling.
“You never know what someone is going through,” Grande said, adding that a person receiving public comments may already be addressing the situation privately or working with an existing support system.
‘Petal’ Examines Grande’s Relationship With Fame
Pitchfork described the title-track video as a dark Hollywood story in which an aspiring performer faces repeated rejection before the audition transforms into a horror film. Grande previously described the project’s central image as something alive growing through the cracks of an environment that was cold, hard and challenging.
She said the album explored separating from different forms of negative attachment, including destructive thoughts, outside voices and forces that no longer served her. “I could be talking about one thing, sharing something, and people could use it however they want and apply it to their own lives,” Grande said while explaining the record’s concept.
