Britney Spears has officially released “She’ll Never Be Me,” a shelved track whose songwriting credits include Justin Timberlake.
The recording comes from sessions for her 2001 third album, Britney, when the singers were still dating. Its October 9 release follows years of unofficial circulation among fans.
Alex Greggs and Bradley Daymond also share writing credit with Spears. The pair handled production as Riprock ’n’ Alex G, according to People.
The track previews Britney (25th Anniversary Edition), arriving November 6, as UPI reports. The reissue expands an album originally led by “I’m a Slave 4 U.”
The Lyrics Take Aim at an Ex’s New Girlfriend
The song’s narrator addresses a former lover who has moved on with a woman who resembles her. She questions his choice and insists that his new girlfriend cannot replace her, even as she admits that he remains on her mind.
Spears and Timberlake split in 2002. Their work together also included “What It’s Like to Be Me,” which closed the original U.S. album. Timberlake co-wrote that song and contributed background vocals.
“I have to say I was a little nervous at first,” Spears told MTV about recording with her boyfriend, as quoted by Entertainment Weekly. She recalled concentrating on her vocals until she could stop thinking about their relationship while they worked.
Spears Took a Bigger Writing Role on ‘Britney’
“This album is the first album that I’ve ever really written on, so I really took my time on it,” Spears told reporters during an October 24, 2001, press teleconference, preserved in critic Jim DeRogatis’s archive. She said performing songs she had written felt more personal and that she hoped to improve as a songwriter.
Spears said she had been drawn to hip-hop and R&B while on tour, prompting her to work with different producers. The Neptunes produced “I’m a Slave 4 U,” which she performed at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards with a live python draped over her shoulders.
The album reached U.S. stores on November 6, 2001, with subsequent singles including “Overprotected,” “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” and “Boys.” Her cover of “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll” was connected to a karaoke scene in Crossroads, the road-trip movie in which she starred.
As the Recording Academy recounted in its 2021 retrospective, Spears told MTV she already sang the rock song at karaoke and wanted producer Rodney Jerkins to rework it.
The Anniversary Edition Adds Vault Tracks and Older Remixes
The expanded collection contains 23 tracks and is being released by RCA Records, according to Apple Music. Its previously unreleased selections also include “Am I a Sinner,” “When I Say So” and “My Big Secret.”
A studio recording of “Right Now (Taste the Victory),” associated with Spears’s 2002 Pepsi campaign, appears alongside those songs. The track list also brings together “When I Found You,” “I Run Away,” “Before the Goodbye” and “Intimidated,” recordings that appeared outside the original standard U.S. sequence.
The Darkchild remix of “Overprotected” and the Co-Ed remix of “Boys” round out the expanded selection, according to RETROPOP. Both are existing versions from the album’s original release period.
Spears Rejected New-Album Reports in 2024
Before this archival release, Spears’s most recent new song was “Mind Your Business,” her 2023 collaboration with will.i.am. She had teamed with Elton John for “Hold Me Closer” the previous year, while her latest studio album remains 2016’s Glory.
In January 2024, Spears rejected reports that she was preparing another album, writing, “I will never return to the music industry,” according to ABC News. She said she wrote for enjoyment and for other performers, adding that she had written more than 20 songs for others over the previous two years and preferred working as a ghostwriter.
