Britney Spears marked a pair of milestone birthdays for her sons with separate messages about the young men they have become and the kind of mother she still hopes to be for them.
Jayden James Federline turned 20 on Sept. 12, while his older brother, Sean Preston Federline, turned 21 on Sept. 14. Spears celebrated both on Instagram over the weekend, sharing newer photos alongside images from when the brothers were children.
Her message to Jayden included a wish that she could be the “best mommy in the world” throughout his life. For Preston, Spears mixed pride with a joke about how much he has been working out, telling him his muscles were beginning to scare her.
The brothers have also begun stepping into the spotlight on their own, making their runway debuts together at Paris Fashion Week this summer.

Spears dedicated the first birthday message to Jayden, her younger son with ex-husband Kevin Federline. She shared a current photo of him during a photoshoot along with an older childhood picture. “Happy birthday to my handsome young boy,” Spears wrote in the post, before reflecting on the life ahead of him.
She described life as something beautiful and delicate, then ended the message by saying she hoped she could be the “best mommy in the world” for him every day.
Jayden was born on Sept. 12, 2006, almost exactly one year after his older brother. Spears has spoken repeatedly over the years about how central motherhood has been to her life, even during periods when her relationship with her sons became strained.
In August, she wrote that a conversation with one of her sons had briefly left her believing she had “failed as a mother,” before apologizing for mistakes she felt she had made in the past.
Sean Preston Gets His Own Birthday Tribute

Spears followed Jayden’s message with one for Preston, who turned 21 two days after his brother’s birthday. “Happy early B-day to u as well,” she wrote in the Instagram tribute.
She then joked about Preston’s noticeably more muscular appearance, telling him to stop working out so much because his muscles were beginning to scare her. Spears quickly added that she was kidding and told him how proud she was of the man he had become.
Spears identified the location as London and recalled that Preston particularly loved spending time there. Page Six reported that she followed the initial tribute with additional photographs of her son and another short birthday message.
Spears and Her Sons Have Reconnected After Years of Distance
Sean and Jayden moved to Hawaii with Federline and his family in 2023. Jayden had previously spoken publicly about the distance between himself and his mother, although he also expressed hope that their relationship could eventually improve. “I 100% think this can be fixed,” he told ITV News in 2022.
That process became more visible in late 2024, when Jayden began spending time with Spears again. She later described having him with her for Christmas as one of the happiest experiences she had had in years. By 2026, both brothers were spending more time with their mother. Earlier this year, Spears shared photographs and videos that showed her with Sean and Jayden during a yacht outing.
The relationship also became part of the conversation surrounding Spears’ difficulties earlier this year. After her March arrest on suspicion of DUI, her representative said her sons would be spending time with her as her family worked on a plan for her well-being. Spears later pleaded guilty to reckless driving as part of a plea deal that resolved the DUI case.
Spears voluntarily entered a treatment facility in April. Reports that followed said both sons had encouraged their mother to seek professional help, with Us Weekly reporting that conversations with Preston and Jayden played a significant part in her decision.
Sean and Jayden Are Building Careers of Their Own
On June 26, Sean and Jayden made their runway debuts together in the Vetements Spring/Summer 2027 menswear show during Paris Fashion Week. Sean walked in a dark coat, shirt and tie with jeans, while Jayden appeared in jeans and a fitted white tank top.
The brothers later spoke to Vogue about the experience and revealed that Spears had been nervous for them even though she was not physically in Paris for the show.
Jayden said their mother sent flowers to their hotel before the runway appearance and repeatedly called and texted them. He said Spears was primarily concerned with making sure that modeling was something her sons genuinely wanted to do.
Both brothers also said music remains an important part of their lives. Jayden expressed interest in modeling again, while Preston was less certain that he wanted to pursue it professionally and described music as his stronger interest.
