Chad Lowe and his wife, producer Kim Painter, are mourning the death of their 13-year-old daughter, Fiona Hepler Lowe. The family confirmed the news in a statement shared with PEOPLE on September 29.
Her parents remembered Fiona as “a loving young girl who was smart, creative and loved to dance.” They said she was adored by her sisters and deeply loved by her parents, adding that she was the “light of our lives.”
The family included information for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in its statement for anyone struggling with mental health, but neither Lowe nor Painter said that Fiona died by suicide or otherwise identified the circumstances of her death.
Fiona was the middle of Lowe and Painter’s three daughters, between older sister Mabel and younger sister Nixie. The family asked for prayers and privacy as they grieve, keeping its public statement centered on Fiona’s personality, her love of dance and the bond she shared with her sisters.

Fiona was born in November 2012 and had recently celebrated becoming a teenager. Lowe and Painter, who married in 2010, are also parents to Mabel, 17, and Nixie, 10.
The family’s announcement offered few details beyond their memories of Fiona. Page Six reported that Fiona’s school community was informed that a student had died and that counseling resources were being made available to students and staff who needed support.

Lowe had regularly shared family moments on social media, including Fiona’s transition into her teenage years in November 2025. In the birthday post, he celebrated her officially becoming a teen and encouraged his daughter to “keep dancing through life,” using the affectionate nickname “FiBear.”
In announcing her death, Lowe and Painter again singled out her love of dance while remembering her as creative and deeply loved. Lowe had also spoken more broadly about what raising three daughters meant to him. During an appearance on the Still Here Hollywood podcast, he called being a “girl dad” a privilege and said fatherhood had changed the way he viewed the world by making issues affecting women and girls personal rather than abstract.

The Lowe family had faced another major loss in January 2025 when its longtime Pacific Palisades home was destroyed in the Los Angeles fires. Nearly a month after the evacuation, Lowe brought his three daughters back to see what remained of the house where they had grown up.
PEOPLE reported at the time that the family had spent roughly a decade building its life there. Lowe praised the girls’ resilience as they confronted the ruins and wrote that helping them navigate the loss had become his central focus. In that same February post, Lowe described being their father as his “life’s greatest joy and privilege.”
