Dakota Johnson is willing to admit that musicians keep finding their way into her dating history. Discussing whether anyone is currently in it is another matter.
During a new interview for Vogue’s October 2026 issue, the 36-year-old actress was asked about knowing so many musicians after mentioning that she would be open to directing more music videos. “They like me. I don’t know what to say,” Johnson replied, before adding, “And I like them.”
When interviewer Alessandra Codinha asked what there was not to like, Johnson laughed and offered a much less diplomatic answer: “A lot! A lot.” Then came the punch line: “Tricky motherf—ers.”
When Vogue asked directly about her current romantic status, she shut down that part of the conversation with a simple answer: “I don’t want to say anything about that.”
Johnson’s Musician Joke Started With a Conversation About Directing
The exchange began when Johnson discussed the possibility of directing more music videos. She already has experience in that world. Johnson co-directed Coldplay’s 2020 “Cry Cry Cry” video with Cory Bailey while she was in a relationship with the band’s frontman, Chris Martin.
When Vogue pointed out that she seemed to know a lot of musicians, Johnson replied, “They like me. I don’t know what to say.” After a pause, she added, “And I like them.” “What’s not to like?” Codinha asked. “A lot! A lot,” Johnson replied before laughing and calling musicians “tricky motherfuckers.”
Johnson dated Drowners frontman Matthew Hitt when she appeared on Vogue’s cover in 2015, and she later spent nearly eight years in an on-and-off relationship with Martin. Vogue says their partnership ended in June 2025.
More recently, Johnson was linked to Tucker Pillsbury, who performs as Role Model. The two were first publicly linked in late 2025, and Vogue described the relationship as rumored rather than presenting it as something Johnson had personally confirmed. PEOPLE reported in August that Johnson and Pillsbury had split “a while ago,” citing a source.
She Would Not Confirm the Recent MGK Reports
New reports have connected her to MGK, whose real name is Colson Baker. PEOPLE reported on September 16th that Johnson and MGK had been “hanging out and seeing each other under the radar for months,” citing a source close to the musician.
According to that account, the two had met previously but grew closer after attending Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s July wedding in New York. The source said they initially communicated as friends and later began spending more time together.
A second source described the situation as “super casual,” while another said the pair had not put a label on what they were doing. Johnson and MGK were also photographed together in New York on September 12th.
When the magazine asked whether she wanted to talk about her current romantic status, her answer covered the subject as broadly as possible. “I don’t want to say anything about that,” she said.
Johnson Says She Still Hopes to Have Children

After years of moving from one production to another, she said she increasingly feels a need to make room for a life that is not structured entirely around movie sets. “I’ve worked back-to-back for so long that now I have this deep calling to shift my perspective a bit and maybe have a bit more of a real life,” Johnson told Vogue.
That could mean making fewer films for a while. Johnson said the people closest to her have grown accustomed to her disappearing for months at a time for work, and she now wants to create more space between projects. That desire includes motherhood.
“I really do,” Johnson said when discussing whether she wants children. “I didn’t expect to be this age and at this place in my life, but for whatever reason, that’s the plan of the universe.” She said she hopes she will still have the opportunity to become a mother and described feeling in recent years that “there is a soul that wants to come through.”
Johnson said that while filming Three Incestuous Sisters, several of the people around her had their babies on set. “It’s hard to be around my best friends, and even on set, and everyone has their baby, and, you know, starting families, and things turned out differently than I thought,” she said.
Johnson said she remains hopeful while concentrating on becoming “a more solid woman.” Away from work, that has meant spending more time at home, cooking with friends, riding horses, seeing her siblings and getting out of Los Angeles when she can.
Her rescue dog, Tokyo, has also become part of that quieter life. As the dog curled up beside her during the Vogue interview, Johnson said what she wants next: “Maybe spending a little bit more time just existing as a human is what I’ll be doing.”
