When the world’s richest man walks into a formal state ceremony hosted by the President of China, people usually expect dark suits, careful smiles, and the kind of body language that screams, “Please do not accidentally start an international incident.”
Instead, Elon Musk showed up in Beijing, moving like a man who forgot he was at one of the world’s most serious diplomatic events and not on vacation. While political leaders discussed trade tensions, Taiwan, and global conflicts, Musk somehow became the unofficial entertainment segment of the entire visit.
President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing for his first visit to China in about nine years, joined by a delegation of 17 American CEOs that included Apple’s Tim Cook, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, BlackRock’s Larry Fink, and Boeing’s Kelly Ortberg. The event took place inside the Great Hall of the People, the enormous state building beside Tiananmen Square used for China’s biggest legislative and ceremonial functions.
So What Exactly Happened At The Great Hall?
The official purpose of the gathering was serious. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met with economic tensions hanging heavily over the visit, while executives from some of America’s largest companies lined the steps of the Great Hall ahead of the welcoming ceremony.
Footage quickly spread across social media, showing Musk rotating in a full circle with his phone raised, apparently filming a panoramic shot of the hall.
The clip traveled online faster than statements from either government delegation, and suddenly, one of the biggest diplomatic events of the year had turned into an accidental meme factory. Tim Cook and Jensen Huang maintained composed expressions throughout the ceremony, while Musk radiated the energy of someone trying to capture every angle before security asked him to stop.
Reporters later caught up with Musk as he exited the venue and asked about his goals in China. His answer was brief and direct. He said he wants to accomplish “many good things” in China. That was it. No long speech, no elaborate explanation, just one quick line before he moved along.
The Selfie That Broke the Internet
Elon completely stole the banquet 😂

The internet’s favorite scene from the trip arrived during a banquet interaction with Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, who approached Musk hoping to take a photo together. Lei is reportedly one of the first Tesla Model S owners in China and has long admired Musk, so the interaction already carried a little celebrity-meets-idol energy before the cameras even came out.
Then the moment happened. Musk blew out his cheeks dramatically before shifting into a strange pout for the selfie, creating the exact kind of expression that instantly becomes meme material online. Lei reportedly reset for another attempt, but Musk glanced away, softly whistled, and started scrolling on his phone.
Social media absolutely feasted on the interaction. Users joked that Lei Jun had just been “humbled by his hero” in front of the internet, while screenshots of Musk’s facial expressions spread everywhere within hours. Then came another widely shared shot from the same clip, featuring Tim Cook standing beside Musk, smiling politely for the camera while Musk appeared caught between a grin and complete sensory overload.
The Comment Section Was Absolutely Cooking
It’s Elon…does anyone expect anything less…Everyone on the planet should be lovin on this!!

Once the clips hit social media, the comment section immediately blew up. “Elon looks a bit tipsy there, I agree he stole the show lol,” one person wrote. “Come on now! You have to admit Elon is quite a character! LOL! Elon!” another added. “It’s Elon…does anyone expect anything less…Everyone on the planet should be lovin on this!!” a third chimed in.
Then came the comment that probably summed up the entire internet mood most accurately: “Elon Musk is a main character in our current story of America, and what a great one he is!” Considering Musk already has 2.3 million followers on Weibo, China’s biggest social media platform, the reaction explosion was not exactly surprising.
America, This Is Not a New Character Arc
Anybody familiar with Musk’s public appearances knows this is far from his first unexpected viral moment at a formal event. Back in 2021, while hosting Saturday Night Live, Musk publicly disclosed his Asperger’s syndrome during his opening monologue and asked viewers, “Did you think I was also going to be a chill, normal dude?” Years later, the Beijing footage made that line age like a prophecy.

There is also the now-famous March 2025 Mar-a-Lago fundraising dinner, where footage showed Musk balancing a fork and two spoons on the tip of his little finger during an event where seats reportedly cost one million dollars each. When the internet demanded an explanation, Musk responded with the incredibly straightforward statement: “A fork and two spoons balanced on the tip of my finger.”
He has also spoken publicly about switching on what he calls “human emulation mode” while navigating heavily choreographed social settings, which becomes a lot funnier when paired with footage of him slowly spinning around China’s most ceremonial state venue.
Oh, and He Probably Should Not Have Even Left the Country

What made the Beijing optics even wilder was the timing. On the same day Musk was taking panoramic videos and posing for selfies inside the Great Hall of the People, closing arguments were happening in his $134 billion lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in a federal courthouse in Oakland, California. A federal judge had reportedly ordered Musk to remain available in case he needed to be recalled to testify.
His attorney, Steven Molo, apologized for Musk’s absence before the jury and explained, “This is something he is passionate about.” OpenAI attorney William Savitt answered with his own pointed response. “Mr. Musk isn’t here today,” Savitt told the jury. “My clients are here. They’re here because they care about this.”
While Sam Altman and Greg Brockman sat inside that Oakland courtroom, Musk was photographed walking through the Great Hall alongside his son, X Æ A Xii, and making the world laugh with his unique selfie expressions. The jury begins deliberations on Monday, although the judge will ultimately decide liability.
So while Beijing got the panoramic spin, the pouty selfie faces, and the internet memes, Oakland is still waiting to determine the outcome of a lawsuit carrying stakes far bigger than any viral moment.
