George and Amal Clooney do not have a complicated formula for making a 12-year marriage work.

The couple discussed their relationship with PEOPLE while hosting the fifth annual Albies at London’s Natural History Museum on Friday, Oct. 9.

The appearance came shortly after their Sept. 27 wedding anniversary. They married in Venice in 2014.

George and Amal were introduced through a mutual friend in 2013. They are now parents to 9-year-old twins Alexander and Ella.

Asked about the secret to their lasting relationship, Amal said, “If you choose the most incredible person, then it all goes well from there.”

George turned the compliment back toward her, joking that although she had looked at him, she was obviously talking about herself. He then said they felt lucky and happy to have found each other.

When asked what they loved most about one another, George suggested his answer would take more time: “That’s a longer, longer show.”

George Has Said They Have Never Had an Argument

During an April 2025 appearance on CBS Mornings, George told Gayle King that a claim the couple had made in an earlier interview still held: they had never had an argument.

As PEOPLE reported, he joked that they were trying to find something to fight about. He was promoting his Broadway debut in Good Night, and Good Luck at the time.

Amal had described their friends’ reaction during the couple’s joint appearance on the program in September 2022. One cousin, she said, routinely asked whether they had finally argued before even saying hello.

Neither Had Been Certain Marriage Was Ahead

In a 2018 Vogue interview, Amal said she had been 35 when she met George and had not known whether the relationship she wanted would happen. She was unwilling to marry or start a family without it.

George told the magazine that he had largely accepted he would not marry again before they began dating. Their early correspondence included emails written in the voice of his dog, Einstein, who supposedly needed Amal’s legal help to escape various predicaments.

The awards are named for South African anti-apartheid campaigner and former judge Albie Sachs, who received a lifetime achievement honor at the inaugural ceremony in 2022.

Speaking at the event, George described using the attention celebrities receive to highlight people risking their lives or freedom for justice. Amal said the evening was also an opportunity to thank those supporting their work.

The foundation provides free legal aid supporting free speech and women’s rights in more than 40 countries. Its programs include TrialWatch, which monitors criminal trials, and Waging Justice for Women.

The Clooney Foundation for Justice named this year’s honorees as Kyrgyz journalists Bolot Temirov and Makhabat Tazhibek Kyzy, Malawian girls’ rights advocate Vanessa Mwangala, American photojournalist Lynsey Addario, Congolese organization Justice Plus and Microsoft vice chair and president Brad Smith.
