Glenn Close traded red-carpet makeup and movie sets for a windy Montana sunset in a new video from home.
The 79-year-old actress appeared makeup-free outside her Bozeman home, smiling into the camera before telling followers, “Hi everyone, I’m home.” In the Instagram video, Close said she was calming down after traveling and enjoying the evening outdoors.
She also had a piece of family history with her. Close was wearing a colorful Madras shirt that belonged to her late mother, Bettine Moore Close, as she watched the sun go down and let the wind move through her white hair.
“I feel blessed,” Close said before signing off. The relaxed post comes during a busy year that has included filming the second season of Hulu’s All’s Fair and an announcement that the eight-time Oscar nominee will receive an Honorary Academy Award in November.
Close Wore Her Mother’s Shirt for the Sunset

Close kept the moment simple as she spoke directly to followers from outside her Montana home. “Wearing my mama’s shirt, letting the wind blow through my white hair,” she said before turning her attention to the sunset.
The Madras shirt, patterned in purple, orange, red and teal, belonged to her mother, Bettine Moore Close. Bettine died peacefully in her sleep on Feb. 23, 2015, at age 90.
Close also made sure another family member received a mention. “And Pip is right behind me,” she wrote in the video’s caption, referring to her Havanese, whom she regularly brings to public appearances. Pip joined Close at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on May 1 when she placed her handprints and footprints in cement during the TCM Classic Film Festival.
Fans Responded to Her White Hair and Natural Look
The video’s stripped-down appearance drew attention from followers who are more accustomed to seeing Close styled for premieres, awards ceremonies and character roles. The Daily Beast’s Looker highlighted the makeup-free appearance and reported that several commenters specifically praised her white hair and the sentimental choice to wear her mother’s shirt.
One follower quoted by the outlet said she had lost her own mother the previous day and that Close’s post made her want to wear one of her mother’s shirts. Others simply complimented the actress’s natural appearance and the peaceful mood of the video.
The setting was far removed from the elaborate styling associated with some of Close’s best-known screen characters, including Cruella de Vil in 101 Dalmatians and 102 Dalmatians.
Montana Has Become Close’s Home Away From Hollywood
Close has lived full-time in the Bozeman area since 2019, although her connection to Montana stretches back decades. In a profile with AARP, she described the state as a sanctuary and said three of her four siblings and her daughter, actress Annie Starke, lived nearby.
Starke has incorporated that family connection into her own work. Her Magnolia Network series The Mountain Kitchen was filmed around the family’s Montana ranch and featured Close in several episodes, including one in which mother and daughter prepared a birthday celebration together.
Close has continued moving between that quieter home life and production. Days before the sunset video, she shared behind-the-scenes material from Season 2 of Hulu’s All’s Fair, the Ryan Murphy legal drama in which she stars alongside Kim Kardashian, Naomi Watts, Sarah Paulson, Niecy Nash-Betts and Teyana Taylor.
An Honorary Oscar Awaits Close in November
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced in June that Close will receive an Honorary Award at the 17th Governors Awards on Nov. 15. She has received eight competitive acting nominations without winning, beginning with her feature-film debut in The World According to Garp.
The Academy praised Close’s emotional range and her decades of performances across film. Her nominated roles have included The Big Chill, The Natural, Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, Albert Nobbs, The Wife and Hillbilly Elegy.
Close will receive the honorary Oscar alongside director Ridley Scott and animator Floyd Norman. Producers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler will receive the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award at the same ceremony, scheduled for Nov. 15 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood.
