Zendaya reached 26 years into Halle Berry’s red carpet history for her Halloween costume. She recreated the yellow Lanvin look Berry wore to the New York premiere of X-Men in July 2000, bringing its printed bikini top and matching trousers back into view.
Her longtime stylist, Law Roach, unveiled the tribute on Instagram on October 31. He shared photographs and video of Zendaya alongside images of Berry at the original premiere, making the inspiration clear.
Berry responded with red heart emojis beneath Roach’s post. She also shared a side-by-side comparison on her Instagram Stories, as Parade reported.
Roach credited the people behind both appearances. He thanked Lanvin’s Peter Copping and Alix Long for their help with the vintage look and acknowledged Phillip Bloch, who styled Berry for the premiere.

The ensemble pairs a yellow, brown and white geometric-print string bikini top with matching low-rise, wide-leg trousers. Metallic detailing around the top adds to the look’s early-2000s styling.
Zendaya completed it with nude pointed-toe heels, tinted sunglasses and her tousled pixie cut. She posed with her hands against a glass wall, echoing Berry’s stance in the premiere photographs.
Roach identified the collection in his caption, writing that Zendaya was channeling Berry in Lanvin fall 2000. ELLE noted that Cristina Ortiz was the fashion house’s womenswear designer when the collection debuted.
Berry’s Original Bikini Top Was Made From the Trousers’ Hem
Bloch offered a detail about how Berry’s outfit came together. According to USA TODAY, the stylist said he made her bikini top using material from the hem of the trousers.
He also fashioned diamond-chain closures for the top. Those details were absent from Zendaya’s version, one of several differences between the two appearances.
Berry had accessorized with a silver belly chain, silver heels and a sheer dark button-up shirt. Zendaya omitted the chain and overshirt and chose a different pair of shoes.
The original occasion was the July 12, 2000, premiere at Ellis Island. Berry played Storm in X-Men, appearing alongside Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in the film that launched the franchise.

The Halloween photographs followed another tribute at the September 14 Emmy Awards. Zendaya debuted her closely cropped hairstyle there, with Roach confirming in an interview shared by Refinery29 that Berry had inspired the look.
Zendaya paired the cut with a custom silver Prada gown. Her appearance drew comparisons to Berry at the 2002 Los Angeles premiere of Die Another Day, where Berry wore a beaded Collette Dinnigan dress.
Berry shared that earlier comparison on Instagram Stories, adding an animated heart and tagging Zendaya and Roach. She also reposted the stylist’s interview and wrote, “She murdered the night.”
The appreciation extended beyond the photographs. Speaking to PEOPLE in September, Berry said she and Zendaya keep in touch and praised the younger actress’s work and style. She also expressed interest in a future collaboration: “I would love to find something to do with her someday.”
