Harry Styles Spots Jalen Brunson at MSG and Crowns Him ‘King of New York’

Jalen Brunson returned to Madison Square Garden hoping to watch Harry Styles from the crowd. Styles had other plans for the man who helped turn the same arena into the center of New York’s championship run three months earlier.

During the September 12 show, Styles stopped his set after spotting the Knicks captain in the audience with his wife, Ali Brunson. He introduced him as the “king of New York” and saluted the reigning NBA Finals MVP as the crowd erupted, according to TMZ Sports.

Brunson had made a reasonable attempt to blend in. He wore a black hoodie, sunglasses and his familiar Siegelman Stable cap, then responded to the attention by clapping and placing a hand over his heart.

Styles joked that Brunson had probably wanted a quiet night out, then compared his chances of staying unnoticed in New York to Mickey Mouse trying to disappear inside Disneyland.

Styles first reminded the crowd where they were, the home of the reigning NBA champion New York Knicks. Then came Brunson’s introduction and a bow from the singer toward his seat.

“I salute you,” Styles told him as the applause continued. The singer eventually asked the crowd to make even more noise before thanking Brunson for attending the show.

Brunson led the Knicks to their first championship since 1973 in June, averaging 32.6 points in the Finals and scoring a franchise Finals-record 45 points in the Game 5 clincher against San Antonio. The New York Post reported that Styles’ shoutout came during the ninth night of his current MSG residency.

Ali Brunson Said the Garden Looked Different This Time

The concert also marked something personal for Brunson and his wife. Ali wrote on her Instagram Story that it was their first trip back to Madison Square Garden since the Knicks won the championship.

She shared footage of Styles performing “Cinema” and said she now looked at the banners hanging above the floor differently. The Knicks’ newest championship banner has not yet been raised, but the building already carries memories from the playoff run that ended New York’s 53-year wait for another NBA title.

Styles has his own unusual history with the arena. Madison Square Garden previously gave him a permanent banner commemorating his 15-show residency in 2022, and his current Together, Together run includes 30 shows between August 26 and October 31.

Brunson’s Championship Summer Is Moving Into ‘SNL’

The Styles shoutout arrives during a stretch in which Brunson’s profile has moved well outside basketball. He and Ali have appeared around New York throughout the offseason, including at the U.S. Open, while the Finals MVP has become one of the city’s most recognizable athletes.

His next crossover comes on September 26. NBC announced that Brunson will make his hosting debut on the Season 52 premiere of Saturday Night Live, with KATSEYE appearing as the musical guest.

Before then, Styles continues his Madison Square Garden residency. The Knicks return to the building on October 20, when their championship banner is scheduled to be raised before the regular-season opener against Philadelphia.
